I'm not a guy, but in my experience (guys & girls) is you can't depend on your partner all the time to satisfy your needs. When you're in the mood, then you're in the mood. If your other half isn't, you still gotta get the job done. That's just how it is. You could wait and let it build, but all you end up with is sexual frustrations which isn't fun for anyone. As you stated your sex life is great, I wouldn't fret over him handling himself when he needs it occasionally.
Maybe he thought you were just turning him down. He figured well, I have the hand as a back up... Don't worry about it. He is at least doing that and not going elsewhere.
Well, without knowing your husband, my only guess would be that he has a lot of built up sexual desire, and it's difficult to hold it in. It can get a little painful after a while.
Maybe this isn't a bad thing that he's willing to get rid of it that way, so you don't have pressure to do it right now. ;-)
There's a very simple answer to this question. It's got nothing to do with whether sex is better than wanking it's just that when a guy needs it he needs it there and then! Its an urge that's near impossible to suppress.

If he wants it right then but you don't, why can't he solve the problem himself? Otherwise, you're trying to tell him what he can or can't do.
