Parental Discipline: Is it okay to spank a teenager?

I don't know, I rad a very disturbing account of a young woman who's father hit her in the face hard enough to nearly make her lose consciousness. I'm sure most of us have seen the video of the Texas Judge William Adams "spanking" his SIXTEEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER with a strap of leather all over her butt, legs, and looked like her back. Why is it that a parent is protected by the law for striking their child - even a TEENAGER with an open hand or a leather belt, or a paddle or whatever...BUT if a random guy took that same belt and whipped Judge Adams with it he'd be arrested and charged with a felony?

I understand the BIG difference between giving a toddler a smack on the butt for attempting to run into traffic and a fully grown adult parent whipping their adult-sized or even aged child with all of their strength. I think that spanking a kid after a certain age is not only physical but mental abuse and should be prosecuted severely. I mean, we don't "flog" people in the USA anymore because it's "not humane"...so why can people get away with spanking a teenager? Basically the same thing.
No, after a child hits puberty spanking becaomes mental and physical abuse.

  • I would say before ages 4ish and after age 7/8 it's wrong to spank your kid. But around those ages children aren't able to comprehend other forms of punishment and realize what they did was wrong. Heinlein talks about this pretty well, pain was created by evolution for a tool to help creatures learn what's good and bad for them. But ya, there's punishment and there's abuse. That jackass of a father was on the abuse side of things. There are better ways to discipline a teenager without having to go physical. And they will comprehend things even if they're stubborn.

  • While I support parental discipline, I do not include physical violence under it. I see it more as just bullying the weaker, though not always that is the case. Use of physical force in the civilian life should be monopolized under police and security only, though here in Finland that is already the case.

    • If it's the law of the country and that house is in said country, then you just say it's the rules of the country and your house is in it. It's the same princible, just on a larger scale. If they don't like that rule, then they can take up and leave to a country where the law says otherwise. And I consider sports a different entity from the "normal" civilian life, so I wouldn't bar violence from it if it's with the rules of said sport.

  • There's no absolute rule about this. If people behave like children, then maybe punishing them like one is appropriate.

    • But assault is a crime, punishable by prison time. I feel like the parent to who whips their teen is acting like an imature child who can't control their anger or isn't smart enough to teach right from wrong without hitting.

  • Because hitting a child of any age is criminal !! I was beat up, stabbed, knocked out, boiling water, and loads of mental abuse every time my step-dad was drinking. I'm from Sweden, but I feel that i have to add that my upbringing was not normal. In Sweden that's really liberal it became illegal to spank or use any physical punishment back in the 60's Sweden was the first country in the world that outlawed all corporal punishment of children.
