It's completely possible. Scenarios include vaginal to anal and if the male has enough cowper's fluid to compensate. In some cases the female just doesn't need it as you can get used to it. The skin isn't particularly rough so it is nowhere near impossible.
I've read that the rectum also produces mucous. This is presumably to help move other things out. Some women's (and men's) bodies have indeed learned to produce it in anticipation of sex. If you have to "work up" to the proper anal plug it will take an additional week for each size. If you're dealing with an abnormally thick penis it may be impossible or take a lot longer.
