Why do boys get morning wood?

So I know it's very common that in the morning, many men have 'morning wood'. I'm curious as to why this is, anybody know?

  • A healthy male gets erections at least 3 - 5 times in each sleep cycle.

Explanation for an erection is the penis made mostly of blood vessels and partially involuntary muscles. When the mind is relaxed blood flows through the blood vessels in the penis giving him an erection. When he awakens in the morning, his body is if has been relaxed results in morning wood

These are signs of good health and as the BA musicbrain5 has said it's also a way of the body checking it's systems.

For us - the common people the body may be inactive during sleep but it goes through a lot of self tests and thus all those components of the body that are not generally used while awake are tested when the body is 'resting' which is also why a lot of athletes, sportsmen/women & body builders take their vitamins/ proteins before sleeping.

  • Guys get a build up of potassium over night which causes the blood pressure to be concentrated in the groin. It is often not a pleasant erection because it can be very sensitive and sometimes painful where sex is just impossible or self relief also has no effect, but the ultimate reason of morning wood is the bodies level of potassium, x

  • It's actually a physiological response that happens 4 or 5 times during the night with every REM cycle of deep sleep (you dream during this time as well). Your body tests your reflexes during REM sleep, and erections are a reflex. Most people wake up during a REM cycle, so that's why men will wake up with an erection. But if he doesn't have one it does not necessarily mean something is wrong (if something is wrong he's only going to find out when he tries to have sex).

The idea that they are caused by a full bladder is debatable since no theory has been proven to be 100% correct.

    • So, then why does it stay hard for so long if its just a routine test?

    • It's hard to say why since doctors don't know exactly what causes erections through the night and into the morning. I imagine that every guy is different so pinpointing why they last a while (or not) is probably hard to do.

  • It's common for men to have erections during the night -- a phenomenon known as nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) -- throughout their life. In fact, the penis can actually stay erect longer and be noticeably harder when a guy is asleep than when he's fully aroused and awake.

    • no.

    • I agree.

  • As you probably already know, sleep is a rest/repair/healing cycle that we go through. During that cycle the body runs a check to see that everything is functioning properly. This is what I read many years ago anyway. I just did a search and found this. link You may find some of it interesting?

    Happy Reading! :)

  • It's like a kickstand that helps to keep us from rolling over and suffecating in the p[illow.

  • Guys testosterone levels are the highest in the morning which probably explains it. I get them even after a full night of sex. The good thing is that I love morning sex also!

  • I have read that it might also be a response to the sensation of a full bladder.

Since it is difficult to urinate when you have an erection, morning wood might be the body's way of preventing guys from peeing in their sleep.

    • That's my answer too.

  • ok I'm wrong its not a muscle. but here's why ti is. men get erections all through the night and sometimes wake up with one. that's where it comes from here's a link. link

  • when you wake up you stretch your muscles. same thing. tis jsut muscle. so it stretches.

    • mm no... no, it's actually not a muscle. nice try?

    • it is a muscle. go to school they teach that there.

  • I always thought it was just a start up to make sure everything is good

  • It's part of the male REM cycle to make sure everything's working properly.

  • it gets our blood flowing. I've woken up with it feels good.

  • i dream of pussy and fucking

  • There is an over night production of testosterone and I believe the level is highest in the morning.

  • Just lucky, I guess.

It is a product of being healthy & relaxed, and it's nothing personal.

If you are in bed with a man who gets morning wood just before he wakes up, and you'd like to do something about it for him, it will probably make his day. He may even return the compliment some time.

This is physiology; his Lower Brain is announcing it is awake and ready for sex. His Upper Brain is still in charge.

  • It can be triggered by a lot of things. Thoughts, a hot chick etc and sometimes it just happens.

  • This is like some women asking why guys get erections? And many women feel men get errections because they purposely choose to get an errection. Not true AT ALL. I get erections randomly for no reason and its out of my control. I don't know why morning wood happens, it just happens, I just wake up with it, not choosing to have it or not.

  • T levels are highest at morning

While a girls sex drive is highest at night.

    Isn't biology swell?

    • I'm an pirouette...my sex drive is highest when the sun is down. :)
