  • Penis Odor – Why it Occurs and How to Get Rid of the Fishy Smell

Among the many complaints about penis problems, unpleasant and off-putting odors are one of the most common. As a rule most men don’t like to talk about this kind of issue with their health care provider, but a fishy penis smell can be embarrassing and it is certainly not a turn-on for a potential sexual partner. Fortunately, getting rid of an unpleasant penis odor can be as simple as cleaning the skin properly and applying a penis crème which contains natural antibacterial agents and moisturizers. Causes of fishy penis odor Unpleasant penis odors are generally a sign of bacteria on the penis skin, especially in uncircumcised men. Dr. David King, director of urology services at the El Camino Hospital of Los Gatos, CA explains that "the most common causes of bad smell around the penis would be related to poor hygiene and skin infections.” Hygiene-related penis odor Foul penis odor often occurs when dead skin cells build up underneath the foreskin, attracting bacteria which create a fishy smell directly related to lack of proper cleansing. To address this problem, Dr. King recommends that all men pull back the foreskin completely and wash the area underneath with warm water and a mild cleanser. In addition, it is important to dry the area carefully as bacteria thrive in warm, moist places and to pull the foreskin back to its original position. Yeast infection Aside from poor hygiene, skin infections can also cause a fishy smell. Thrush, or yeast infection, is often the cause of penis odor and can affect both circumcised and uncircumcised men. Aside from an unpleasant smell, a yeast infection is often accompanied by a cheesy, whitish discharge, as well as uncomfortable burning and itching. Painful urination may also occur if the infection has affected the urethra, or opening at the tip of the penis. Bacterial vaginosis (in sexual partners) Men whose female sexual partners are affected by bacterial vaginosis, a condition which also causes a fishy smell due to imbalances in body chemistry, may also experience the odor on their own penis. Again, washing carefully and moisturizing the penis skin can help to address this problem. Other causes of penis odor Some of the less-common causes of penis odor include urinary tract infections; the bacteria that cause the infection may spread to the outside of the penis, around the urethral opening, resulting in a detectable fishy smell. In addition, some diabetics are affected by a condition known as ketonuria, in which waste products from the breakdown of fatty acids can accumulate in the urine and cause a fishy odor. Promoting a healthy penis Fortunately, most cases of bad penis odor can be resolved fairly easily. As mentioned earlier, proper hygiene is the first step. Aside from keeping the area, clean, men can take the following steps to prevent or eliminate unpleasant penis smells: 1. Moisturize. Overly dry penis skin often.

  • If the smell is really that bad he should be able to smell it himself. Of course, like any other body part with mucous membranes, it can develop smell when kept in poor hygiene. As a man ( and I'm tall so my nose is "far" away from my genetalia) I can tell you that I can smell it if there's something brewing down there (like for instance if you don't shower right after sex but sleep on it).

So for him not being aware of any smell is weird. Either he is in denial or he really doesn't care except you keep saying that he showers so that really doesn't add up.

Infection comes to mind but you really can't hide that as a guy. He'd experience discomfort, pain, itching, swelling, redness.

I have also got a different suggestion: it might be you. Maybe, under some sort of hormonal influence, you have become suddenly repulsed by his natural body (penile) odour. Reasons for hormonal shifts could be pregnancy, changing birth control or maybe even early onset menopause (very unlikely of course).

So... With that being said, maybe the two of you could see a doctor together and explain that you find the smell of his penis repulsive but it could be you since your boyfriend doesn't smell it. Then, the doctor could make the call. This way, you don't "blame" your boyfriend directly and you'll get all scenario's covered. If he really thinks he doesn't smell, he'll agree to join you to solve "your" problem.

    • Oh no this all about him...his pens never smelled like this until last week...and I haven't been having sex with him since the smell...just a bj in the shower after I cleaned him...but after the shower he stilled smelled horrible...im not taking birth control pills either...we use condoms

  • Is he circumcised? If not, guys really have to pull back the skin to make sure everything underneath gets cleaned.

Smelly balls may be helped by clipping the hair. Hair will hold in sweat which can grow to be smelly.

How bad are his armpits? These areas are our most sweaty places. Maybe deodorant down there may help. Maybe it's his diet. Because what goes in does come out in a variety of ways.

When you broach the subject again be very aware of much guys identify themselves with their dicks. In their minds, you insult or criticize the penis you've insulted/criticized THEM personally. Do everything you can to assure him you don't have a problem with him, or having sex with him, or giving him a bj in general, you love pleasuring him. It's just this situation makes bjs very unpleasant for you to do. Take a sympathetic approach. If nothing you guys try works then maybe he needs to see a doctor. An atrocious smell could be a sign of a medical problem.

  • Is he overweight? Sometimes that can affect the smell 'down there,' giving it an unpleasant odor from the sweat build up and such. There are also glands down there that produce scents, so perhaps he has a hormonal imbalance that is causing this smell. A change in diet can also be the cause, eating lots of garlic, foods high in fat, etc. Lastly, he could potentially have an infection. If it's dietary, ask him to go light on certain things for a while to see if the smell improves. If not, advise him to get checked at the doctor to make everything is alright. If it's a weight issue... well, he's either got to lose weight or you'll have to stick the shower. Maybe put some deodorant in the creases down there (legs, belly, etc) or have him spray cologne lol

hope this gets better! Been there, done that, and it's nastttt! Definitely takes the enjoyment out of it.

    • No he's really skinny actually...& lol cologne and smelly balls don't go together & I know he got to much pride to be going to see a doctor its just to much to deal with lol but thanks for your help :)

    • Regardless of his pride, if he is sexually active, he should be getting check for STDs/STIs and regular physical check-ups. Just try and make it known how much more enjoyable it is to be physical with him when he smells really good.

  • If he can't smell it himself, it's because he's gotten used to it. Kind of how if you wear a certain perfume long enough, you feel like you have to apply more because you can't smell it anymore, even though other people can. And since it really JUST happened and has been smelling all week, even though he has taken showers and all that, it's probably an infection or some type of fungus. Definitely something he should check out at the doctor. To hell with his pride, if it's serious it might cause him pain if he doesn't get it treated. It could really harm his penis.

    • Yeah I agree...there were many times he was suppose to go to the doctors and he never showed up up...he thinks he can heal on his own he has this cocky attitude...

    • He sure sounds like a keeper.

  • You need to use an antibacterial penis health creme. These are made just for improved hygiene and will ensure that things do not become infected or irritated down there. You just rub it into your penis skin once a day and you will be all set.. they are awesome so check them out. Hope this helps.

  • He should see a doctor & get that checked out. fishy smells can indicate other health problems for both men and women genitals. This doesn't sound normal & he should also be tested just to get this under control.

  • Yes, he should see a doctor. It could be something like a skin fungus which are easily treated.

  • Erm.. you sound quite insensitive! Also perhaps if you took the damn thing seriously instead of giggling the whole time you tell him... OR being rude about it, he might take you seriously! You're pretty immature, that's my opinion!

He obviously has some kind of infection there and needs to get it seen to. Approach this differently if you really do love him, tell him you think he might have a condition he needs treatment for. Be gentle about it and be sensitive. Just imagine him telling you your vagina stinks like fish, and pulling faces or laughing at you... not nice huh?

    • At first I was stupid about it...theni told him straight up...that's when he left & he won't go to the doctors...and please girl unlike him I could tell if my vagina smells...this a grown ass man iim talking about...i shouldn't have to wash his penis for him...im avoiding this dude sex fora week he shoulder been caught the memo cause we use to f#ck like p*rnstars

  • 1. Get him to see a doctor

    2. Get him tested for an STD - keep this for last after the doctor

    3. Maybe a change in diet and lifestyle too will help if that's the reason

    4. Could also be an yeast or fungal infection or similar - most likely this may be the reason

    5. Hygiene is another reason and a very big one at that. YOU may wash it before sex or he may too but if he doesn't shower / wash as his body requires it's natural that it smells. Especially if he's uncut he may have Smegma

  • That is totally not normal and either his hygiene is very poor or he has a medical problem and should be seeing a doctor to find out what the problem is.

  • sounds like he needs to go to a doctor. sounds like an infection or potential fungal thing. either way he shouldn't smell that way after taking a shower

  • Ouch that's bad for a girl who enjoy to give bj.I think he has bad hygiene especially if he isn't circumcised. He needs extra care.Stop telling him in a joking way.Straight up telling him that his penis stinks. If he cleans himself well and the problem still occur then he would need to see a doctor.

    • I agree with the hygiene part & for some reason I think he knows his penis smells...how could he not its just embarrassing ...and he have to much pride to see a doc

  • Bacterial build up. I recommend LOTRIMIN® AF JOCK ITCH ANTIFUNGAL POWDER SPRAY. When used as directed, will clear it right up. Come back and share your results.

  • Tell him he's only getting BJ's straight out of the shower.

  • You need to talk to him about this in a non-sexual situation. Either he doesn't clean himself properly or he has a medical problem.

  • check his diet, i am sure you know of some more like girly soaps (perfumed or antibacteria) is he circumsized, does he need to scrub under his foreskin, check with a doctor

  • I am embarrassed to say, but I had this a couple of years ago. I have a longish and tight foreskin, and just suddenly got the same fishy smell. It turned out I had contracted 'bacterial vaginosis' (google it) from my partner. She didn't show any symptoms, but I smelt bad with it. In the end I saw our doctor and was given bactericidal cream (bactroban) and had to use it for a week, Problem solved after she had a course of antibiotics. It certainy wasn't a hygine thing with me as I wash twice a day and always wipe the tip of hy helmet after a pee. I can retract fully when soft. Hope this helps. Dave

  • I saw a video about using a health creme for the private parts called Man1 Man Oil after washing to moisturize the skin and cut down on the fishy smell. Anyone have any luck with this?

  • No need for drama about this. Bring packets of baby or adult wipes with you and clean him thoroughly. If he is uncut, roll back his foreskin.

I will say that he should care about this and not let it happen. I keep one in my wallet in case of an "emergency" where I might be getting oral and don't have time to freshen up. I excuse myself to pee and clean Junior after I do.

    • I washed it for him really good...the smell didn't go away..so I know little wipes wouldn't help...

  • It might be an STI, but he definitely should be able to smell himself. If the smell doesn't wear off after a shower, there's definitely something wrong going on.

    • I've got check recently at my doctors and& I don't have anything ...so he shouldn't either...and I'm not having sex with until that awful smell goes away...its terrible & he won't see a doc

    • That's not proof of him being clean. You might just not have been infected or you might not be showing symptoms. If you want to know if he's clean, he's the one who should be tested.

  • Does he still have foreskin? I think he should really have it circumcised. The problem will be gone then.

  • Could be an infection caused by bad hygiene.

This is a case where you have to look out for you. If the smell is so unbearable or you feel that being intimate with him will be risky because he might have an infection... you have to tell him to take action. Spend more time washing. Wash twice! If there is no changes, see a doctor.
