Alternatives to Yasmin birth control pill?

I yesterday discovered about the controversy around this birth control pill, that I have been taking for more than a year :/ Apparently so many women are suing the company for serious medical problems like blot clots and all sorts of other medical complications. (lots of deaths too). This is alarming to me as I've been experiencing major discomfort around my heart area for a long time now since starting the pill if I think about it. So I need some suggestions for a new Birth Control pill to go on. What is the best pill you can recommend to me? Thank you : )

  • If you have MAJOR discomfort around your heart, please go see your physician. go. go now!

I think that Yasmin is getting more attention lately because of new advisories and released reports by the FDA in the recent years. It is mostly about drospirenone, the 4th generation progestin in Yasmin. It seems to increase risks of blood clots by 3x compare to other low dose combined birth control pills, which already have increased risks. I think that the prevalence of blood clots for drospirenone is low - about 10 in every 10,000 women. Like what you and TedStar said below, blood clots are a risk of estradiol/progestin pills.

If you do have discomfort or concerns, people generally switch to 2nd gen levonorgestrel progestin, as TedStar suggested. At high concentrations, levonorgestrel is used as an emergency contraceptive. At low concentrations, it is used as combination oral contraceptive regimens. Levonorgestrel/estradiol pills usually do not have the anti-acne feature that girls like in Yasmin.

Selecting the levonorgestrel/estradiol pill is based on your own preference in regimen, body tolerance and medical plan. Consider pills with low estrogenic and androgenic effects, like levonorgestrel at 0.1mg and estradiol at 20mg. Your pharmacist/physician should know which pill in your medical plan is available to you with these doses and that fits your preferences and ideal regimen. See how your body likes it within 3 months. Make sure to tell your docs about other medications you may be taking, such as antibiotics. Also, tell them about your heart issues. Definitely, try not to smoke. Even consider stop using oral contraceptives for purposes other than birth control.

    hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Okay. One of the drawbacks of the contraceptive pill is that it does increase the risk of getting blood clots regardless of the brand you take. The oestrogen/ progestin combo does increase the number of clotting factors, which leads to platelet aggregation, which can lead to thrombosis (Blood clots). Pills which re 4th generation like Yaz are especially implicated. The risk is higher than most, but still lowish.

Try going for a second generation pill with Levonorgestrel. Google Levonorgestrel or go to your local pharmacist for the brand names. I'd don't know names I'm just a med student

    • Yeah I know blot clots are a problem but it seems like Yasmin is getting a lot more news and lawsuits than others so that is what alarms me the most. Thank you for your recommendation. Levonorgestrel is used as Plan B I see so would that not be even more bad to use in a normal birth control pill ? I just know that Plan B is not very good for the body.

    • i think that he means the low dose levonorgestrel, which is not plan b. Good Luck!

  • Why not ask your dr? There are over 100 different pills and they all react differently for different women. And I know that there is the big controversy with Yaz like there is some other birth control every year or two. What I find is funny is the stuff that they sue over is the side effects that can happen with ANY birth control pill with hormones. If you read the booklet that comes with it, every single thing they list is in there.

    • The problem is that with Yaz or Yasmin is that it seems to be formulated differently than other birth control pills. It seems to have gotten a lot of attention from the FDA as well over the years (unlike others) and it's been proven that your risk of blood clots is higher than most others due to it being formulated differently. This is why it;s being singled out and lawsuits going through the roof... there must be a reason behind it all.

    • Kinda like any ortho one and countless others. I just go under the assumption when you add things to your body you carry a risk with any medicine. But I also really liked Yaz better than any other one I took.

    • There's always a risk. I just want something that is less criticized openly and not constantly under speculation at the FDA.

  • I used to use Sprintec. I did not experience any side effects at all from it. Although, currently I am on the depo provera shot but only because I have an awful memory and could never remember to take the pill at the same time every day. I would recommend Sprintec though as it worked fine for me. I only got off of it because I wanted something I wouldn't have to remember as often.

    • Thank you!

    • No problem:)

    • Thanks for MH! :)

  • Maybe you should get the shot every 3 months I think. There's this other thing where they have a little stick and they put it in your arm and you have to replace it every 3 years but my friend says it works really great.

    • I'm looking for preferably a birth control pill. But thanks for the input :)

  • Yasmin (or YAZ as it is called) can create medical problems for many women. I think the issues with YAZ began a few years ago. For some women (not all women), the side effects can be serious.

Instead of asking GAGers, I would strongly suggest you 1) get off YAZ today and 2) consult your doctor/gynecologist. You need to explain to the doctor the symptoms you are experiencing and ask about next steps. Do not do this on your own ... consult your doctor.

    • Well I can't do this on my own. I need a prescription. But seeing as my doctor was the only who told me to use Yasmin, I want some information regarding different options as well, instead of just him recommending me something that is controversial again without my knowledge. At least then I have some knowledge on what works well for some women.

  • What about plasters. Its like a monthly plaster you put on. Every month you replace it with a new one

  • Yasmin gave me migraine ...

    • I'm asking for alternatives, not side effects.

  • Any kind of yazmen, Yaz , Yaznia anything birth-control is bad for you the chemical combinations are dangerous I wouldn't take it even to prevent awful periods you could try traditional birth control and all natural ways to regulate your menstrual cycle there are many books on this topic
