SO! I'm relatively new to GaG as well as USA, so let me introduce myself. My name is Kikka, I am from Bonn and I grew up in Germany. Being someone who has immigrated to the USA has shown me how different the USA is to my home country.

First of all the hello, Germans will always say hi to an acquaintance with their last name, whereas in the USA thats like an insult!!! (Didn't look so good with all my new co-workers) To me its just weird to say hi with to someone I barely know with their first name. It's like "Hi Kikka", "Hi Mr. Afflec... um... er.. ben?" yea what a loser I know. 1-0 to USA

My next confusion is food! You guys eat everything with your hands!! Last week I asked for a knife and fork at a Pizza place, the waitress looked at me like I was a complete idiot. I mean don't you guys get like grease on your hands and stuff... ugh jeez. 1-1 Germany's tied ;)

Finally its the T.V, why is everything so hyped up. Like no wonder the election is turning into WW3 ! The journalists talk about it like its Mayweather vs Pacquiao (another overhyped event by US TV). It makes no sense, I was just watching 2 weeks ago "The contest of the century" (epic movie guy voice) and then we see a big picture of Trump and Hillary, like why!?!?!

Anyways even though I complain a lot, I love this county, the people are nice, funny and gorgeous!! I've never felt so at home even thought I'm an ocean away from home.

PS. Thanks to all the people who have been so kind in welcoming me to GaG, this place is like a dream come true!!!

I sometimes struggle to watch American TV shows. Sometimes they follow the American theme more strongly for a sequel because they believe that would equal success.

For example, I'm British but taking news for example. It seems more like a casual argument when they bring 2 people that disagree on to discuss an issue. They usually bring representatives of all kinds of fascist groups to argue too. The only time they allowed that in the UK was with Anjem Choudary the British born jihadist. He was only on TV because the media had built up an image about islam that they didn't believe had an oppoite existence.

But the explosive action on general American TV, the need to always have someone over emphasise a joke with sound effects and the fact that the camera literally will never ever stay still for a moment (it might look still at some points but it's actually gradually zooming in or out). It's a bit too over the top in your face.

Just curious, what compelled you to move and how did you start

I moved for better pay, cheaper life, to meet new people and I moved her with my best friend through the green card lottery

green card lottery? that's the first i heard of this. i thought the immigration process to the usa was a lot harder vs countries like australia or Canada. How did you decide where to move

no there's a lottery where you have a 1-5%chance of getting a green card for the USA
