12 of the Most Annoying Double Standards in Society

Despite the pushes for equality in the past 100 years, society still has a long way to go. I came across some photos recently that were quite telling about what many women and men in our society go through. For those who claim "men have it worse!" or "women have it worse!" put yourself in someone else's shoes for once because the truth is, MANY of these double standards are true and affect us all.

Until we can all come together and acknowledge these issues, we can't progress as a society. Some may call it wishful thinking to aim for decreasing double standards but it doesn't hurt to try, right? Raising awareness to issues in society is how all social changes are made. Both men and women are guilty of perpetrating these double standards against each other and even against members of their own sex! So, here are 12 of the most annoying, pathetic, and downright stupid double standards in society.

1. Images of boobs and cleavage everywhere but you better not get caught breastfeeding!

2. Why are female breasts still taboo but man boobs can be out in the open?

3. Male sexualization is cool, but not female sexualization!

4. Let's face it, sometimes how attractive someone is changes our perception...which goes for men AND women!

5. Revealing, or covered, housewife, or career woman...we just can't win.

6. If it's a guy, he sucks as an individual. If it's a girl, it's because "all women suck."

7. The great "makeup vs. no makeup" debate.

8. The differences in how society views emotions between men and women is incredible. *Negative labels are in red btw*

9. How you look on the outside dictates whether you are "allowed" to enjoy food.

10. Casual sex: when men do it, he's a stud. When women do it, she's a 'slut.'

11. Yes, there are even double standards when it comes to breast size!

12. Because men MUST be tough and can't possibly show weakness, be virgins, or have body image issues...apparently.

So there you have it. Double standards oddly enough...don't discriminate. Whether you are a man, woman, fit, overweight, tall, short, rich, or poor, there is a double standard that will inevitably affect you. Which double standards annoy YOU the most? Let me know in the comments!

5. Well one issue here is that thinking you're ever beyond criticism is a mistake, in part it becomes a joke about the person writing the comic for being dumb and not understanding that. And the second thing worth noting is who those speech bubbles come from, the answer is largely other women and the joke here becomes that it's the women from the other panels bitching at each other.

I think what I find most interesting is these double standards are almost integral to creating romantic desirability. Imagine a world without them. Clothes and makeup don't exist. People just have sex whenever and it's wrong to judge anyone for doing it. No one can tell what's physically attractive and what isn't so pretty much anyone will have sex with anyone as long as they like their personalities. Everyone is open about their insecurities, everyone is emotionally supportive in every possible way. It may sound cool but if everyone was emotionally supportive in the most perfect of ways we'd all be raised virtually the same and there would most likely be no difference in personality. There would be no challenging life changing moments to create a variety of personalities. Unless you argue that our DNA is more important for our personality than our upbringing in which case it's impossible to make everyone perfectly emotionally supportive because we'd inherently act differently no matter what which will lead to abrasiveness between people. So again if there are no distinct personalities and no looks to base things off of then who hooks up with who? It would be just a random dice roll and you'd have zero reason to value your partner over the next person. Completely dissolving the idea of romantic marriage or relationships. You might as well just pick two kids at random and tell them they're partners for life now. It'll make no difference. I really like the sentiment of this take but I always find takes like this to be somewhat idealic and not very practical. I'm not implying that we should ignore these (I'm African American so in no way would I ever think of arguing that social injustice be ignored). However, I personally believe some double standards, paradoxes, and flaws in society are necessary and/or inevitable just because a perfect society is impossible to reach or even define. Simply because change and difference is a necessary part of life. Change and difference are in direct conflict with perfection. So work as hard as you like to push things towards your viewpoint of how things should be but don't be surprised when you find out there's still just as many issues. Maybe we don't need to fix EVERYTHING.

Female breasts are part of the sexual body. Women use them for sexual attention,

In the western world, women (especially white women) are the most privileged group to ever exist in human existence.
Society coddles them and treats men as disposable.
Laws are biased in their favor
Schools are biased in their favor
Health care is biased in their favor
Government and societal funding, programs, etc are geared towards women.
Women victims of men are taken seriously while male victims of women are not (EQUAL in Domestic violence and likely the same of sexual assault if male sexual assault were not ignored.)
Endless women only scholarships, funding, clubs, groups, gyms, etc.
Women can openly make hateful statements about men without fear of social repercussions.
Women can trick a man into pregnancy and hold him responsible for it while keeping him from seeing it.

Ok, great, go for it, let's see how far you can get with that -it's not likely to be equal.

While I can agree that in cases involving kids and/or rape, women tend to have the priority over men (like, there's very few circumstances women will have the children removed from her care) there's this mentality of that if there is a rape case then out of the window goes "innocent until proven guilty" -for something where there is difficulty proving that it happened in the first place, it's clear to see why women get the priority "weak, unable to fight back, too scared etc.".
On the other hand, in the eyes of the law, a woman can't rape -rape only involves a penis being inserted into one of the holes -otherwise, it's just viewed as sexual assault.
Which sucks, because in schools there's a massive emphasis on teaching kids (well, teens) about consent but only the charge of rape applies to guys (the one time where consent is actually important, sure, sexual assault is also bad, but in the eyes of the law it's treated as less bad than rape).
Uh, for reference I live in the UK.
So yeah, I can see where you're coming from -especially when you also consider the fact that males are more likely to drop out of university than females.
And that suicide is the biggest killer for men as well as the fact that more funding goes towards researching cancers that affect women than cancers that affect men.

For number 2 you are kinda wrong -sure women can buy push up bras if they want, but that's because of the emphasis on "women have boobs which can be used during sex".
But the soul purpose of the boob is to be able to feed the infant, which is not, inherently, a sexual act.
Which is where the double standard comes into play - women using boobs for the original purpose are considered immoral, women can't go around with their tops off (even if they're on the flat side) because boobs in any form are viewed as sexual.
The exception is when a guy is so fat that it looks like he has boobs -because, he's a guy, and guys don't have boobs.
But even with the comment of "women use boobs in sex", well, I'll have you know that guys can stimulate their nipples during sex (the nipples are an erogenous zone after all) and I believe it's been found that women with larger boobs have decreased sensitivity around the nipple than women with smaller boobs -therefore, men should also experience sensitivity -as both men and women have nipples (sometimes also functioning in men -hence how some men can experience breast cancer).
But yeah, both men and women can use their nipples during sex and masturbation for stimulation so, yeah, both are sexual, except one is allowed to be exposed brazenly while the other has to be covered up at all costs.
The only thing I can say to defend boobs being covered up is the fact that not wearing a bra (or wearing an ill-fitting one) can cause back problems in women with big boobs.

Ok, so I wasn't aware that the post and the comment was old -I don't exactly check these things... I didn't actually realise that old stuff came up in the recommended.

Anyway, the things that you commented were broad generalisations of women -therefore it can be veiwed as being sexist -at the very least, you're tarring all women with the same brush.
What you had said would be the same as me saying "all men are rapists and will kill women if the opportunity arises" -you didn't say most women or some women will abuse the legal system, you implied that all will do it, therefore, it is sexist, because it's a negative stereotype (it seems to be the negative stereotypes that are deemed sexist, racist, etc.).

Well, for #2, that's somewhat debatable. Able to provide some confirmation that they are inherently more sexual than a male's chest? Sure, decently sized breasts provide some indication of whether they'd be able to nourish offspring, but using the same logic of that argument, a muscular, chiseled chest on a male would also indicate suitability as a partner due to being strong enough to protect the offspring, and as a result, also be attractive. Concerning 10: In my works, both sexes are portrayed badly for it. It's portrayed as an attitude problem in general.

Except 1 and 2, I agree with all. With 1, I'm not okay with either media showing women in bikinis or women breastfeeding in public. Unfortunately the world is too unsafe to breastfeed in public and i can't do it when I know that people are watching. I have a comment concerning the superheroes. I am a huge fan of the Marvel superheroes and I noticed that artists tend to do the female superhero's breasts quite big while the male's manhood does not exist... it's flat.
