No, if a white child had worn the same shirt we wouldn't even know about it. But being called a monkey doesn't have the same negative historical context for whites as it does for blacks. And that's the bottom line. I'm all for MLK's dream, but let's be 100% real. There are still plenty of people, millennials included, who go around thinking that blacks look like apes. And use that thinking and imagery to look at us like we're subhuman. That's why people didn't like it.
What's wrong is what's going on behind the scenes. The whole anti racist social justice, PC thing is a lie, a front for something very insidious. People have been programed to go off like that , turned into weapons. That's what all the coddling and safe spaces are really for.
Tolerance is a one-way street with the social justice warriors. They expect it in maximum measure, but refuse to give any at all. We're all primates, so I'm not even sure what the rioters are angry about. Seems like just another reason to pitch a fit and steal some clothes.
I don't see a problem with it. It's a fun little hoodie. Racism will never be die but we can minimize it. The problems is people are too sensitive these days. They will try to find something to be offended about.
It wasn't racist. But people who jumped on the hate wagon are. Because if the kid was white or Asian, none of those idiots would even notice. The thing is nowadays we have some people who are in a constant state of indignation, who seek for anything that could be interpreted as racist, because that allows them to cry and ask for some things. "Racism", or crying against it, is a powerful political weapon. And some people knows it, and use it to get some privileges.
@dev765 white are refered as "chalk face" or "dirty race", and Asian as "lemon face" or "ching chong". Should we ban any pic of a white with a chalk in his hand, or any Asian with a lemon? This is just ridiculous. It's just a whine.
I never heard someone call a white person chalk/dirty rice ever. It's not ridiculous because black people have been ridiculed far more than both groups. You can google obama's family and find tons of remarks pertaining to monkeys. If this wasn't the case then people wouldn't find it so offensive.
@dev765 It's just because it's more shown on media, but in reality, black people are as racists as anyone else. At least in France, where "chalk face" and "dirty race", or "weak babtou" (which means weak white).
There's no denying that some black people are racist. How widespread are those derogatory names for white French people? Do the majority of them even know about these names for them? If they do just imagine being called those name for hundreds of years then see an ad with white children wearing of those derogatory names for the white French on it. I bet many of those white French people would find it offensive.
@dev765 monkey isn't offensive, unless you made it. There's no excuse for it. In my opinion, either you consider a thing racist for everyone, or you don't, at all. When you start giving special treatement to some people, that's where discrimination, injustice, and racism start. I'm not calling black people "coal faces", I expect them not to call me chalk face in return.
So you're saying black people made monkey offensive? They just got up one day and said lets make monkey offensive for no reason at all? Why didn't they choose bear or something?
@dev765 Actually they do. There was something like that in miss France election, when the newly elected Miss France was called racist because she refered at one "black" miss France as one with a "lioness mane", talking about her hair. Things like that are offensive if you consider them to be. And as long as you consider it offensive, all you'll do is making people uninterested in the real racism, wherever it comes from, as in the story Peter and the Wolf. Cry about racism for no reason, and when a real case of racism appear, no one will care.
Why would a white or Asian kid wearing a monkey shirt cause backlash. The reason why this ad is causing backlash is because there is a long deep history of referring to black people as monkeys. The term monkey was used as a way to dehumanize black people by insinuating that they were closer to monkeys/apes then they were humans/Europeans. Hell, when Human Zoos were legal and rampant in America and Europe, Black people were always put in the exhibit that housed the monkeys.
White and Asian people were never historically insulted with the term monkey, so of course nobody would bat an eye.
"In my opinion, either you consider a thing racist for everyone, or you don't, at all." You're opinion is wrong and racism doesn't work like that.
Um no it doesn't. Different groups have different histories. So how in the blue hell can you conflate the unique suffering of one group with that of another.
Do you need to see a psychologist or something because there is no way a sane person can not see that huge fallacy that you just presented.
@Starrk History is what it is: history. If you base you life on what happen to people 100 years ago, then you're an idiot. Especially if you blame today people for what past people did, and ask for privileges today for what people suffered yesterday. This is a gigantic bullshit. And will certainly never fix racism. It will make it worse. But that what those people want, because that's how they earn their money and fame. So keep apologizing for shit you never did, while I live in the present, guilt-free.
No. History provides answers for why the present is the way it is. Just because something is in the past doesn't suddenly make it irrelevant. If you go to the doctors complaining about pains, then your doctor is going to ask you questions relating to the past, such when did the pain start? Do you have a history of this type of pain? etc, etc. The past is just as important as the present since the past provide explanations behind why the present is the way it is.
For example, if this H+M company knew anything about history then they could have saved themselves from this awful PR nightmare where they became public enemy #1 for about a day.
@Starrk If black people knew history, the would be against arabs and other black people. The first because they used slavery at a bigger scale, more violently and for a longer time than whites. And the second because those who brought slaves to white people were other black people, and they also praticed slavery between them.
But it seems that accusing white people to be evil is more rewarding. Even if white people were the first to abolish slavery, and even when it was still used, there was many country who promulgated a code against bad treatements on slaves, and some even forced the master to pay them in nature. So yeah, history isn't exactly as those who are whining are pretending it was. As for segregation and apartheid, the first is now asked by black people, banning whites from some places or even jobs, and the second is used against white people in south africa, by black people. So, yeah, history.
What in the blue hell do you think you're doing? Of course Arabs and African participated in the slave trade and of course Africans sold rival tribes to Europeans in exchange for weapons and money. This isn't some classified secret.
Now if you're done venting can you get back on topic.
@Starrk You're talking about history to justify that people whine about racism. I show you that history isn't that simple and that black people constantly complaining to and about white people because they apparently are the devil on earth is bullshit. They complain about slavery? They did it too, and others did it too but they don't complain to them, they side with them. They complain about segregation, while their plans is to actually make it happen again, but this time for their own benefit. They complain about racism while seeing racism everywhere even where it doesn't exist, and being racists themselves. Just look at BLM to see who is really racist.
See the problem now? On top of that, the kid on that photo doesn't care, his mom even stated she didn't care and didn't see any racism in it. So, who's complaining? People who aren't concerned by it. And why are they complaining? Because using the race card is a powerful tool to get some privileges, power, and of course, money.
@Rissyanne That, too, but apparently being guilty is passed on through genetics, but only for white people. Funny thing, I come from a poor farmers family, and they never were rich enough to even think about buying a slave. Even when it was a thing, my ancestors never did it.
"You're talking about history to justify that people whine about racism."
No! I'm using history as an educational source behind WHY people might get upset over this ad. Now why that made you feel compelled to start talking about "slavery, segregation, race card, white people being devils and BLM" is beyond me.
I don't know if you're being obtuse or just trying to be argumentative, but your entire response has absolutely nothing to do with what I just said.
It is just another example of liberals being racist and making up BS. They know it is just a kids sweater and isn't intended as racist at all. Liberals are too prejudice and they constantly see things that way.
I think it's people looking to see what they can be offended at. They're the ones who made the connection between "monkeys" and African people. Anyone else would see the picture and think they might by it for their kid.
I honestly think that some people just don't have anything better to do than to look for ways to be offended.

because people are being paid to riot and to convince others to join in the riots. People will do a lot of stupid shit for money. But yeah, thanks to Obama, people are under the impression that they have the right to riot and burn shit up whenever they feel an injustice has occurred or they disagree with anyone for anything. It's a sad world.
I like monkeys. I like monkey style martial arts, but I can't practice it because I'm black because of racism. It's bullshit!! Some asshole ruined monkeys for me. They can go to hell!!!
See the people who put out this advertisement didn't even think twice about it being racist, because they aren't racist, until someone points it out, and a bit of racism kicks in to even realize
I get you're point but your title showed your bias... if people are offended by something they have a right to protest. No one speaks on these senseless protests and riots caused by Sports fans (which happens more than political protest)... no one really complained about "no taxation without representation" but as soon as black people want to protest it is a problem and it is "unamerican" lmaooo
So in other words we can never move on from racism, we'll keep making the word 'monkey' a racially charged term so that black people instantly feel offended whenever they hear it rather than attempt to make the word meaningless and harmless. Hmm..

That's appalling. Even if the model was white or Asian, etc. I don't think it's appropriate to call anybody a monkey, even if I had a child I would never refer to them with that term.

Bottom line is there isn’t a person alive that owned a slave.

I don’t believe in looting, but only a fool would say we are very far removed from calling black people subhuman names like ape and monkey.
Only a nitwit wouldn’t have caught that in a catalog proofreading session, so it makes me wonder about the company.

I just wallow in the irony that in order to find this racist and offensive you first have to associate a black child with a monkey.
But who came up with the term P***h monkey though in the first place? Over time it stuck with people who are the minority.
Black people were referred to as monkeys in the past not whites.
So of course a white boy wearing it is no big deal, but it hurts black people to see a black wear something like that.
Big difference.
So in other words we can never move on from racism, we'll keep making the word 'monkey' a racially charged term so that black people instantly feel offended whenever they hear it rather than attempt to make the word meaningless and harmless. Hmm..
I agree with you 100%. People are so bored with life, that they have to make up bullshit and act all offended.
Oh look at that, a male feminist disliked my opinion.
