What Happened?

Across the country, protesters took to the streets for a fourth day to express their anger over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer kept his knee pressed into his neck for more than eight minutes.

Former police officer Derek Michael Chauvin was arrested Friday in Minneapolis on charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death.

Two nights in a row they have destroyed many businesses here in Richmond, Virginia. There was a bicycle shop that had been in business for 10 years and looters stole every single bike in the store. They even stole bikes that were being worked on. The owner said that they will never be able to reopen. I commented on an FB post that the looting was wrong and I had someone who had the balls to say that the destruction was because it was what was in people's hearts and minds. Well that couldn't be further from the truth because these people who worked in these businesses have lost their jobs. In my opinion our worthless governor should have called in the Natural Guard. I guarantee if this looting happened in a 3rd world country these shop owners would have defended what was there's and these people would have been shot.

And justice requires a conviction, not just an arrest.

The colleagues might not have realized the danger of what was happening or maybe the murderer was one of these people that you can't really bring down because they are in power or have connections with hierarchy like it can happen in many companies.

Well, the problem is that rioters tend to think it's a generalized thing while it's a problem on an individual scale, not necessarily on a systemic scale.

Have you considered that, perhaps, your experience is different from theirs?

Was your introduction to the police as a child something like "the police are there to help us", or "if you're stopped by the police, make sure you don't do make any sudden moves"?

My interactions with European police have all been positive and respectful on both sides. Their requests have always been reasonable, and articulately expressed. That doesn't seem to be the case for people with non-white skin in the US.

If you call the police to your store because of looters, it will probably be the looters, not the (black) owner who gets handcuffed.
If you're in your own home, you're unlikely to be arrested for being there.
If you're shopping, you're unlikely to be followed through the store.
If you cross the street, you won't hear the sound of car doors being locked.

You might like to look for the Jimmy Kimmel video about white privilege; it's main point is that you may have a hard life, but the colour of your skin didn't contribute to that.

@goaded Although I don't deny that there will be cases of racism because it happens everywhere, I doubt that it is a systemic issue. That said, if I remember well, black people commit around 50% of the crimes while they only represent something like 13% of the population. This might not be accurate because I don't remember the exact figures but, statistically, it's legitimate to expect a black person to be a criminal more than a white person solely based on objective evidence and statistics.

That said, this should not cloud an officer's judgment and assessment of the situation and justice should remain fair for everyone.

What you said about the mindset of "the police is there to protect you" kind of shows that it's a matter of perspective and education. In Europe, a lot of crimes are committed by minorities too but, if you don't behave like a thug, even if you are part of the racial minorities that are known to be "more criminal" on average, the police will treat you like any citizen.

If you're black, dressed normally, walk normally and talk politely and respectfully, it's highly unlikely that you will be bothered, just like any other citizen. However, if you have your pants down, walk and talk like a thug, it's very likely that the police will see you in a bad eye or as a potential threat.

Apparently, the disparity in crime (in the US) correlates more with poverty than race. It's just black people have to live with this stigma all their lives, and it's not just how they're dressed, otherwise they wouldn't be arrested in their own homes and businesses.
