Do television shows and movies about teen pregnancy glamorize teen pregnancy or does it prevent it?

During my freshman year of college my English/Literature 102 professor asked the class to write a term paper on the topic on whether or not teen pregnancy television series or movies promote or prevent young girls becoming pregnant. This memory did not come back to me until I was randomly watching Teen Mom 2 on Paramount Plus the other day after work. Then I remembered having a few classmates and other girls from high school become pregnant on purpose just so they could get on the MTV show 16 and Pregnant while others created a pregnancy pact (for those that do not know, a pregnancy pact is when a group of girls try to all become pregnant at the same time) similar to the Lifetime based on a true story movie The Pregnancy Pact where a group of teenage girls from Gloucester, Massachusetts decided to become pregnant at the same time due to one of their friends who was already pregnant convincing the other girls to become pregnant. The pregnancy pact was also nicknamed "The Juno Effect" after the coming of age movie Juno, which was about a 16 year old high school student facing an unexpected pregnancy.

Television series for example as 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, Unexpected and many others were originally aired to show viewers (mainly young women) what life as a pregnant teen and young mother would be like. And every time there was a commercial break, the programs would advertise websites on how the individual can not only protect themselves and prevent an unexpected pregnancy, but also about dating abuse and where they can receive help. However, after the television shows became a hit, most individuals worried that the television series as well as the movies would glamorize teen pregnancy especially due to a few of the young ladies featured on the show became celebrities by appearing on covers of magazines, walking on the red carpet for award shows, becoming extremely successful financially, obtaining bigger houses, luxurious cars, going on fancy vacations, and becoming guest appearances on other television shows. In reality, the average pregnant teenager and teen mom are unable to afford a lifestyle similar to those on the television shows with most of them living paycheck to paycheck and unable to finish school.

However, there have been studies suggesting that these types of programs have lowered the teen pregnancy birth rate, with more young teens being cautious when it comes to sex by taking birth control and getting further educated.

Even though MTV, TLC, as well as other broadcasting programs might have started out with good intentions when it comes to these types of programs being aired on television in hopes of possibly educating the viewing public (mainly young teenage girls). The message unfortunately has been seen for some as a way for them to gain their "fifteen minutes of fame" with hopes of becoming a celebrity similar to these young ladies on television.

With the falling birth rate things like these shows are only preventing teen pregnancy and pregnancy in general. Which isn't a good thing in my opinion.

What i understand is from these series they are only for entertainment although what these stories encapsulate is that how to take ownership of such situation and be responsible because what's happend is happened you can't undo it they do in their limited way show how to be responsible even if things go south.

They neither promote it nor they try to make you prevent it as it's all individual choice and for preventing there is sex education.

What these entertainers do is they narrate you the stories that is happening around you the situations one might face during the time of teen pregnancies.

It was believed earlier that when a girl reaches 16 or has her first period like she is developed and capable of healthy birthing and is true you got healthy babies.

But the issue is that 16 year old kid now has to take the whole responsibility which takes away the teen years of enjoying and being a kid themselves.

So to prevent these things then it was chosen to avoid yet by nature and our internal cycle we are indulging in sex by 16 and one moment of carelessness could lead to teen pregnancies.
It has been so from centuries.

I think the shows and movies about teen pregnancy definitely does not glamorize teen pregnancy but some people may perceive it as glamorizing.

It usually prevents teen pregnancy but some teens might see it as an enjoyable or positive thing.

They make is sound like it is a lot of fun. They think it is all getting presents and they are the center off attention. The reality is that most teenagers that get pregnant can look forward to a life of living on welfare and living in section 8 housing.

It's a so short sighted move, kids shouldn't have kids, it's a failure in raising responsible kids if they actually go along with any of that. Because life isn't a movie or game and everything you do is permanently done.

@Light909090 and yet we still have teen parents. In India, they get married early and instead of advancing careers, have kids! LOL.

  • anon1903

They wanna teach kids to be more careful? Show scenes that depict teens using contraceptives! Period! A lot of people over glamorize childbirth. Show kids it's okay to be horny but condoms are a must! Adults need to stop "scaring" them and start "educating" them!

Never watched one. Sounds like we need surgeon general and media warnings about the hazards of teen girls.

I know girls that get preggo just so they can be on that show, then they are misery because they have to care for a baby and can't have fun, play sports etc. It's insane, that would suck ;/

Movies like Juno don't teach the dangers of it, since it's overall a happy movie. Yet from what I have seen of Teen Mom it's less happy. Those people are struggling.

Safe to say most of it is chocked full of propoganda of some tilt though.
