Does being shy / timid inspire a protective instinct in others?

I'm just curious since I've always been the shy, quiet, somewhat timid kind of person. I sometimes get picked on at school for being so shy, and somebody always ends up defending me (I get too nervous to do it for myself.) Most of the time it's people I've barely (if at all) spoken to.

My two best friends are also very protective of me (not so much each other though,) because I'm the "innocent" or "cute" one of the group (... or so they've told me, but I'm not really sure what they mean by that.)

I know people have good intentions when they defend me, but I can't help but feel a bit like a child when they do.

Sorry this is so long and detailed, thank you though :)
