Why is the US so against universal healthcare?

US is the only developed country to not have it and last time I was discussing about it, some Americans called me a communist. wtf.

  • Several reasons. But other than the fact universal healthcare sucks and creating it would normalize the entire field to that shitty level..

Because it's fundamentally not a right. Its a commodity. A right is something you can impose on another person. If a doctor is done at the end of their shift and a new patient comes in, with a problem that can wait. Are cops going to come in and arrest that doctor for not staying after? Because he just infringed on your "right" to healthcare.
That's not how it works. You don't have a right to another person's service. They're not your slave.

    • Thats not how it works. doctors do not get arrested for that in places with UC.

    • In order for there to be strong enough justification for Universal Health care you pretty much have to argue it is a human right. Just like someone like Bernie Sanders does.

Since it's not a right there's really no argument for why it's okay to have a "right" to someone else's labor. If it is a right and that's what you want to argue, then what happens to people who choose to decline their labor? Are they now a slave?

  • I'd love to know. Its strange for a first world country with PLENTY of resources to treat healthcare like a priviledge.

  • Well because of the high cost. Obamacare was the answer but it got screwed up and drug companies and health insurance companies drive up the costs.

  • most of are in favor of it.
but those who aren't (the insurance companies) have their hands deep in the pockets of money grubbing politicians more concerned with re-election than human welfare

  • I'm against it - totally! Universal healthcare means you have a single payer, thus, zero competition. In the US, our capitalist methodology of conducting business means that costs will automatically rise, and almost exponentially.

As for actual HEALTH-care, doctors are forced to accept whatever that system allows for treatment, regardless what they consider best for the patient. Drugs are limited by the system, not whether they help a patient for one simple reason - cost.

It is a MAJOR DISINCENTIVE for new medical treatment, new drug development, and patient care. Typically, universal healthcare limits what doctor's can earn too. I absolutely don't want that shit here in the US!

Finally, Obamacare is an abomination. It was everything EXCEPT about HEALTH or CARE! The sooner we get rid of that AND the govt's control off our health care, the better. People don't trust our govt to run a freakin' lemonade stand. Why the Hell would you PURPOSELY WANT them doing anything that controls your health!

    • You do realize that private health insurance would still exist too. It not just a bottle neck.
My brother suddenly had to get emergency bowel surgery after experiencing severe pain last year and spent 2 months in hospital and had to undergo a SECOND surgery.
We would not have been able to get the treatment, let along aford it if it wasn't for UH.
My brother is now doing extremely well.

    • Private health insurance works much better. Or even better still simply pay for your healthcare outright. I realize not many people can afford that. But those that can should have that option to bypass any insurance. O-care forced people to buy insurance, and waaaaayyyyy more coverage they didn't need. Another reason to keep govt hands OUT of healthcare.

  • 1) It's not the role of the government
    2) Can't afford it
    3) The US government is so overly bloated and inept at everything it does, it would just screw up health care.
    4) People can pay for their own stuff instead of expecting others to do it for them.

    • If we not afford it, then why we give billions to the military? Healthcare is much more important than the military. I say cut the military budget in half and spend the money on more useful things

    • @HeyThere94
The military is the roll of the government. Healthcare is not. Plus health care is waaaay more expensive than the military. Even what the government currently spends on healthcare is more than double what they spend on the military.

  • Because the medical field makes more money than any other organization in the US. It's all about cash.

I'm a free market supporter but even I understand in order to protect your consumers you have to give them quality healthcare at a reasonable price. I think that's the issue, we are worried we'll sacrifice quality for quantity, sure everyone has access but it's shitty access.

  • Because they see how well the government runs things. Like the post office, Amtrac, the DMV and they don't want their health care run that poorly.

  • Half of us are not against universal healthcare, in fact probably more than half.

It is not possible because of lobbying by healthcare companies, hard resistance from other Americans who oppose government regulation in everything except social customs, and it is not possible because to do such a thing would probably require an amendment to be at all effective, which will never happens, as it requires the approval of 3/4 of the 50 state legislatures + 2/3 of both houses of Congress

    • Also for the record I'm for universal healthcare. We spend more proportionally than other countries yet get less

  • Because half of America is anti government interference. They believe that people should earn everything on their own and not rely on government services.

    • @MarketData They believe that privatized healthcare take care of everyone which it doesn't remotely.

  • Americans have been primed to be against communism since the red scare where they were terrified of the spread of communism from the Soviet Union. As such they are against any sign of communism.

Also they are extremely selfish in that they only want to pay for something they themselves uses and they are of the opinion that paying for someone elses hospital bill through universal health care will be like taking money from them and giving to those undeserving as well as how it will increase the cost for their own health care.

    • Obamacare was a huge failure. My deductible went up to $3000 and my premiums doubled. More people have insurance but they can’t use it because of the deductible is so high.

  • Universal anything for a population is in the socialist and communist models. We're a capitalistic society

    • So are many other countries yet they they atually care about their citizens instead of just money.

    • But they have different foundations. American society is more so about individualism. You're supposed to have pride in doing everything yourself. You own your home. You own your car. You own this you own that. Nothing is to be given. You work hard and reward yourself. That's what America was kind of built off of. And to have universal healthcare would go against that idea of being self centered. I'm not saying I'm against universal healthcare, but America wasn't built to be universal.

  • Most Americans are for universal healthcare, but our government is so fucked up and corrupt. They only care about themselves and Wall Street
