  • The alt-right loves to claim that but ironically it is mostly them who get offended about every trifle.

Other than that, I think people generally have a pretty healthy feel for what's offensive and what isn't. Also, people have the right to be offended. The alt-righters would probably say "only if it's for a good reason" but I call authoritarian bullshit on that. Because who is going to define what is or isn't a "good" reason? You? Me? My parents' cat? We all have different feelings and different issues. And instead of insulting people as snowflakes, I think it makes more sense to talk to each other and try to understand where the other person is coming from. I might not agree with you on something but I am very empathetic person. So, if you describe to me how this issue/incident made you feel, I can still understand why you would be offended.

As an outsider (non-American), I think the real problem in the US today is not that people get offended too easily. The real problem is that people are generally very mean to each other and that they have stopped to talk things out in a civilized manner. Especially in the realm of politics, people who disagree mostly talk ABOUT each other, rather than with each other.

    • If you are knowledgeable and well studied on politics you will realize you can never agree or compromise. Some people think taxes are moral and some people think they are immoral. That is the heart of 99% of issues. There is no middle ground. Sure im for clean energy, unless i have to pay for it. But people want to force me to. Thus they are theives and criminals as far as im concerned. How can you negotiate and compromise with someone stealing from you? Fuck em i want them dead just as if they were a home intruder trying to rob me in the night.

Again, this was not my point. So if you don't understand my post, please just stop commenting.

Also, comparing taxes to the atrocities of the Nazis is absolutely ridiculous. And it once more shows your lack of critical thinking skills and your inability to be nuanced. Taxes are not a black-or-white issue; it's only you who turns it into that with your childish, extremist position. Luckily however, you belong to a tiny minority. Most people are able to be nuanced and differentiated about topics such as this and with those people productive discussions are very much possible, even if disagreements exist.

Oh gotcha. Sorry, this multi-person convos can be a bit confusing sometimes ;-).

  • Sadly, yes. And that's a damned shame too. People can't be funny or say... really anything without someone's panties in a bunch and basically declaring war.

And not just online too. At my job someone got fired a few weeks ago for being accused of making a Trump joke. This was outside the building and not in earshot of any customers. Didn't even get a chance to defend or deny it.

  • It seems to me that humans were always getting offended over politics, religion, etc. It’s why we had wars... beheadings, witch-hunts, jail cells, etc.

When people hate themselves and their situations, it tends to leech into their need to argue or to be right. It’s typical human behavior, practically comes with the duality of life otherwise there would be no lessons to learn, no experience to gain. Right?

  • I would say yes, probably because society has gotten softer. With the onset of certain technological breakthroughs and advancements, comes at a cost of more kids staying indoors and being hooked on their devices for longer and starting off at a much longer age. Combining this with the proliferation of fast food restaurants, you get millions upon millions of individuals who aren’t as active as previous generations. Years prior, more people were active, working with their hands, and didn’t have the technology we have today to make their lives easier. If people get more easily offended today it could be in part because of the described above reasons.

  • I say this nearly every day. My mom agrees.

Let me be clear though, there is nothing inherently wrong with being offended, its when it's for something irrational (technically subjective) that it's a issue. But the frequency and the things people get offended at is bizarre. You are on your tip toes nowadays.

  • Yes. There is always going to be at least person who takes offence to what has been said. In fact this opinion is getting under someone’s skin right now.

  • Way too easy. Say anything while you do not intend to insult anyone and you'll always find some overly emotional butthurt bigot.

These days What is not offensive?

Even if you say "my name is hugh mungus" (true story by the way) some insane feminist loses her shit and accuses him of sexual harassment.

    ---

So all in all: Whenever you say something do not try to not offend anyone unless you deliberately want to or you're communicating with coworkers.

  • It's not that people get offended easily, it's just that everyone seems to be offended by something different than everyone else. Politically, about half the country would have a stroke the entire length of their spine if you call a guy in a dress a guy, and the other half of the country will deafen themselves with their own wails of agony any time a black man doesn't stand up for the national anthem. But if you swap offenses, neither will give a damn.

  • Definitely, I remember talking to a friend about how we could get Korea completely united. Instantly this white girl with purple and blue hair comes over starts screaming at us. What was more confusing was she just stared at us when she got off the tram. But I'm assuming that was just mental illness but people have that stereotypical look and approach but usually has more context rather than screeching in the carriage.

  • People are more sensitive now, but not more easily offended. a lot of people just fake offense, because they're connected into the zeitgeist of what you're not "supposed" to say. If you don't follow that their sensitive constitution handle that and react.

Most outrage today is fake outrage. Same with being offended. Doesn't matter what you say. If someone wants to be offended they will be offended.

  • Yes in a way
We as societies have valued narcissistic and solipsistic behaviour and from that of course people have learned narcissistic and solipsistic behaviours are good so that is how people behave and so they are easily offended by what diverges from their world view

  • I don't know. It definitely does seem as if people take others being "too easily offended" as an excuse for disrespectful behavior. People aren't offended like you push a button, they are offended because you are an asshole or at least come off as one.

    • I do agree that people should learn that jokes are jokes and not meant seriously, so getting offended over a joke is ridiculous. But I also think people should learn when it's reasonable to be offended by a joke, namely when whoever makes the joke is not joking but serious about the message of the joke. Jokes are only harmless as long as thes are not meant seriously.

  • i can understand certain things with overreacting, but, some things are just silly

i saw a story about a girl who tried out for the cheer team. she didn't make it because she wasn't good enough, but, her mom complained and they let her on the team. she wasn't good enough to make it. she should not be on the team, no matter how "pretty" she is.

However, if someone paints a swastika on my door (knowing im jewish), shouldn't i be furious?

  • Or people assumes immediately we're offended you free just say something about the joke which can be taken too far sometimes. Ironically, they get offended by the critiques they get about their jokes so they just scream snowflakes.

  • As a kid we used to joke about the stories being PC...

    1) Snow White and the 7 vertically challenged individuals

    2) Cinderella and the aesthetically challenged sisters from her father's choice of alternate life companion

    3) Sleeping Aesthetically Pleasing young lady and the Prince who agrees to sit patiently next to her sleeping form until she wakes up naturally so she can give consent to be woken from the sleeping spell that is killing her.

    4) The Smaller than Average Mermaid and her perfectly valid life choices (shorter and more sanitised than the Disney version)

Of course, back then it was a joke...
