What's an experience that changed the way you view the world?

I'm feeling very introspective today. I've been thinking a lot about the things that have changed me. I wanted to see what other people have experienced and try to learn something.

  • 2 big ones for me , serving in the British Army and passing the infamous P Company... Paratroop selection and training , it taught me I could do far more than I thought. Being deployed on operations really changes a world view !! Becoming and being a father , I am primary custody parent too and still working FT. Have battled and defeated depression and PTSD

    • It’s nice to know someone beat depression. I hope one day I can.

    • @courtney06 Dig deep , develop a strong will and you can... it is a tough opponent , you have to fight it like fighting in a Lethwei match , then you will beat it.

  • Visiting Puru on mission trip to repair an orphanage for sexually abused and homeless children. I'd never seen so many kids who have nothing, no parents, just these two Christians with heart to run this center. They had to turn kids away because they didn't have space. The kids were so... wanting... of someone to love them, guidance, hope. Couldn't talk to them as I didn't speak the language, so it was just presence to communicate.

So when I see people trying to get in the country, I see why and I think..

  • Well, there are many things I could name you but living abroad has certainly had a tremendous affect on the way I perceive myself and the world around me. It's experiences and memories I hold very dear, despite the fact that I've actually had to go through some very big struggles too (so it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns).

  • My ex is how I lost my innocence and I don't mean virginity. I saw a side of a person that was just horrible and sad and it really made me mature in a sense. But it kinda took the magic out of the world. Know what I'm saying?

    • Yes I do. My last ex was horrible and it was pretty shattering. You often hear about bad relationships but when you experience it first hand it’s very eye opening.

  • Health issues and travelling around the world have both had profound effects on my outlook and etc travelling seeing how some people and cultures live is an eye opener on so many ways and becoming suddenly very ill reset many of my values and humbled me to what’s really important in life

  • Visiting China. I suppose I kind of fell in love with the place. It also made me realise how ignorant I was about China and the non-Western world.

It's the world's most populous country, they have as many people in higher education as the entire population of the U. S., they work super hard, they do a hell of a lot of manufacturing, and research, and I can't see any possible way the U. S. can keep up.

The U. S. is done as a superpower, in my (admittedly still ignorant view). The future belongs to places like China, India, maybe even Africa?

  • Having my biggest dream crushed despite already having a foot in it. Tasting it and then having it taken away. It hurt. It still hurts, but it has made me (in a sense, forced me) to let go. I'm still trying, but it's not easy. I know I gotta let go cause I gotta move on, and that has made me become more aware of myself and how I think and act towards others, and react to what the world throws at me.

You realize nobody truly cares. The world doesn't care. You're gonna die. You're nothing in the universe. So stop putting so much pressure on outcomes and just make sure you're doing the best you can, and you're doing the right thing. Always try to improve yourself, but do not worry about what you can't control.
    Happiness comes from within.

  • Constantly, meeting shit men made me realize my dad was right there are a ton of pigs out there that will do anything for sex. Now I know not all guys are sexual but I am fed up how there always have to be 1 guy who has to turn anything sexual when it involves me and the last situation like this made me not want male friends I am tired of it. Do I have to be honest and tell a fucker straight up he never have a chance with me? I think he ugly and being a pig constantly making me think he disgusting? like how am I suppose to deal with this problem the only conclusion I have is not having male friends and ignore guys for now on unless they prove they are a decent person. Another situation I realize is that if your nice there going to be people who are going to take advantage of your kindness too much and you need to stop being too nice. I mean if you willing to help out all the time start saying no because eventually, you are going to befriend a mooch who going to mooch off your kindness until you get mad and cuss them out of ghost them. Happen to me now I don't care anymore I don't want to help, it's really sad how people ruin genuine kind people.

    • I relate to the part about being friends with men. A lot of times they want sex and have hidden motives to get it. Lately whenever a guy wants to hang out with me who I only want as platonic friend, I have to say I’m not looking for a romantic relationship or casual sex. If I tell them I only want to be friends they automatically assume that means friends with benefits so I have to make sure to tell them I don’t want sex. I hate having to tell men this because it’s awkward but honestly if it scares them away that means I’m weeding out the wrong people. I had to distance myself from this one guy recently because he kept turning everything into sex jokes and joking about spanking me after I told him to stop.

    • @courtney06 Right? like how are we suppose to say it without coming off as stuck up thinking everyone wants us? my dad recently said "look stop being passive I should had taught you to more be firm in life because being passive is or will screw you over eventually I fail in parenting when it came to that" I thought about it my dad right I am passive too passive! the ex male friend hit on me made me realize how sneaky males are. Online you see people always call women backstabbing horrible people but so are men. You mean to tell me that women are worst then men, I met way worst men then I do with women. It's sucks because I want to have a decent relationship a lot of females I know met amazing guys and I keep meeting these horrible pieces of shit men and I realize maybe because I am too passive I attract these assholes to me.

  • Moving far from home really opened up my eyes but I would say that something that really touched me and changed me was losing my grandparents in less than a year. That was a tough one and taught me to always be kind and grateful for what you have because you could lose everything when you least expect it. So yeah, I'd say that now I'm able to appreciate life and my loved ones more.

  • My husband was run over on Christmas Eve 12 years ago, he suffered 26 broken bones heart lung spleen damage and had 3 brain heamorages aswell as a bilateral diffusion of the brain, he died 3 times within a 24 hour period. In this moment I realised it really didn’t matter if our border forgot to replace the empty toilet roll.

  • Breaking up with a narcissist and sociopath. There’s some really horrible people out there and it’s really shattering to experience them personally.

    • I experience this in high school I do wonder if you can be a sociopath with narcissistic traits because he has no empathy and plus he thinks too highly of himself as well. It really does destroy your love life it took me a long time to actually want to try to find a genuine relationship which is this year I kept dating after we broke up but I am very scared to commit myself to a new person again. I have deep trust issues now and I hate how people treat it like it's no big deal I had a ex friend tell me I get over it. Which one of the reasons I don't want to be friends with person. It's fucking to trust and move on from it, you always cautious when you start dating people because you looking out for the signs this person is a sociopath or psychopath.

    • fucking hard*

    • I also I agree I don't get why some people stop talking and can't be honest with you why they don't want to talk? I mean what's going to happen I am going to accept it and be like ok and stop bothering you why can't just admit "hey I don't want to talk to you anyone because you annoy me or whatever reason" which is why I barely like people anymore so many will ghost and never explain themselves I got confronted a month ago about ghosting them I own up to it and admit I was being asshole when I did that and said sorry and they forgave me. Being honest is too hard nowadays apparently.

  • The way my ex insulted and belittled me after the break up
The way friends I count on abandoned me when I was in a tough position
The way neighbors looked only for themselves and didn't sympathise or help when we needed understanding and someone to say a nice word
The way colleagues kept digging each other's grave everyday in order of favorism from the boss
The way total strangers didn't help when a forest fire killed 150 people and destroyed 5000 houses and just passed through the area thinking it isn't their problem
In general I am disappointed from humanity. some bright examples -a dark rule

When guys stop being just my friends and trying to physically grab me. I learned guy and girls friendships dont always work the way you want it.
When on jr high my boyfriend left me. Everyone turned their backs on me including my "friends" my lesson no one liked me in the first place.
Lesson 3, i was almost killed in a freak accident/ explosion. I should have been went to the hospital but my mom refused to take me and literally no one cared. When you are close to death, you find no one really gives a damn about you anyway. So why make friends not like they care a out of you.
