Why is it that times changed so much that houses have to cost money just to live in them alone/by itself?

When you think about it you have to pay rent and other bills and it's totals to a lot of money per year just to pay for your home and the necessities to live in the home.

However with the increasing poverty rate it doesn't make sense that the prices increase past one's pay sometimes. Yea if you make an average pay and are barely able to keep your home it's not right because in most cases the rent or mortgage is too much unless you are ahead.

The problem with it is that you often have to pay for light, gas, water bills etc. You also have car payments, phone bills, food and other small but important items.

I understand that it's a business but most places try and get extra money off of residents. This is causing people to be unhappy;however, it doesn't end there. Some apartment complexes will have poor management and maintenance will do a poor job on things that need to be fixed. Why do we still have to pay if there's such bad quality and treatment with everything about where you are living (especially when it's not getting fixed fast enough)?
