Why do I still have an accent in my own native language?

Anonymous
My native language is Spanish.
Even though I'm bilingual, very fluent and returned to my homecountry at age 20, sometimes people still asked if I've ever lived elsewhere. I was being interviewed yesterday at a hotel position and I was asked if I've ever been in the US before because my Spanish sounds different.

I learnt English in 1st grade and completed my school years there. I know that played a major role but by this time, I thought that accent would fade by now.
