Is it racist to point out the fault with this teacher's statement about slaves?

Anonymous
A teacher put on her classroom door, "They didn't steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects... astronomers... and made them slaves." Slavery was prohibited in the U. S. in 1818. This teacher is in U. S, and I know she means that slaves were more than just slaves. They're people. But I'm sure most African slaves weren't scientists, astronomers, and entrepreneurs before 1818.
