The US needs a voucher system so parents can select their child’s school just like they select everything else in life. Then teachers, the good and valuable teachers, would be paid market value and the bad teachers would have a very hard time getting employed.
Teachers are like gays and Mexicans. People supported them until they started demanding more and more. EVERY year they bitch about how they don't get paid enough. They get a raise, then go on strike again the next year. Like you said, they can't get paid $60000 a year, when they have 2 months off, even more in college/university.
Also, I think many Americans have lost respect for teachers because they are brainwashing students with their Leftist propaganda instead of teaching facts.
I don't know where that one commenter got info that teachers make 60K a year. I have NEVER heard of a teacher making THAT much! Maybe if he is doing research on the side, but certainly not for being in the classroom.
"... teachers make 60K a year. I have NEVER heard of a teacher making THAT much!"
Most teachers where I live make more than that. The top teachers make over six figures. That doesn't even count the fantastic benefits they get, which essentially doubles it. This is in an area with below average cost of living.
I'm in Ohio. The average in Ohio is around 56K, and a little higher where I live. The numbers vary some depending on the source. I know for sure there are teachers where I live who make over 100K because it's published on the district web site.
There are ten states where the average is over 60K, and only one state where it's under 40K (S Dakota). The overall US average is around 56-58K.
Again, this is for ~9 months a year, plus great benefits. Lifetime pensions for retirees average in the mid 40s which greatly boosts the effective pay package for teachers. Teachers do pay into the pension plan. But it's a managed plan with a heck of a lot better payout than sometime like Social Security which is essentially un-managed with very low return on the investment.
I think I remember where he lives and I'm familiar with the area. I don't know if he works in the same place that he lives. But if so, I can see it being lower pay there. It's the same with almost every profession, the money is in the cities. Also, if I remember right, he's not all that old. Which means even for his district he'd be below average pay.
Your husband is definitely incorrect. Many teachers I know work second jobs because they can barely support themselves. Besides the fact that many schools make teachers use their own money to buy classroom supplies. Teachers in other western countries are paid far more and treated with far more respect.
I think that teachers are not treated the way they should be. They are underpaid and not appreciated. I know I could never even think about doing their job. Parents have problems trying to make two children listen. Can you imagine how hard it would be trying to teach 20 or more children. They have my respect.
Seven hour work days? That's someone that doesn't know what they're talking about.
Where we need to support teachers on more is on classroom discipline. A lot more.

Yeah, I never heard of a 7 hour work day. My aunt is a teacher. She gets paid well because she's been teaching for over 35 years, but she definitely has to be at work at 6:30am and she doesn't get home until 4.
I think he's thinking school hours=teacher work hours and it doesn't.
There's a lot of work that gets taken home, parent nights to prepare for and communication with parents. Sometimes also have to tutor kids after school.
Of course teachers are not paid fairly but instead of protest for higher pay so that services to poor people have to be cut, please support a restructuring of our economy to TAX THE RICH. That is only impractical and impossible if we the people roll over and play dead.
Teachers are overpaid for what they do. They constantly compare their salaries to private sector engineers, and others who have to produce a profit for their employer or get fired. The teachers with the best student results work for private schools and earn less than half of what public school teachers rake in. In my area, public school teachers START at over 70K.

I don't know about America, but where I am from teachers have one of the worst paid professions (many teachers can't afford to pay their bills if they do not have a rich husband/wife). And they usually have to work very long hours as they have to prepare their lessons and mark tests during evenings (until 9pm on many days), so they don't have much time to spend with their family.
Teachers are very VERY under appreciated and under paid. Americans should not be asked to entrust the very future their children to the lowest paid least appreciated.
If you cannot support our teachers your saying you are unwilling to provide the best for our own children.
Yes but not bc the Democrats are for it, in fact, everything the Dems are for is contrary to most Americans values. Their debates continue to be a clown show, it’s hilarious
Educators in this country are not respected as they should and have to form protests with students just to get the attention necessary to get shit done about it.
I feel like teachers get paid a fair amount. Are we forgetting they get off at 3PM and have summers off? My moms a teacher and gets paid well, and was always home when we were as kids.

The elementaries here don't even let out until 4 so I have no idea where you get the 3pm thing from.
Fuck no it doesn't... they get paid like shit and they work a fuck ton of hours and have to go to college to get treated like a walmart worker... at least at walmart you only have to have a pulse to get shit on by them

The amount teachers are paid should be paid should be based on job performance. Like a teacher in a failing inner city school should not be paid the same as say a school in the suburbs with high academic achievements.

No, if we did we’d start blaming parents for their awful kids instead of the teachers. School is only a few hours a day. Kids get the majority of the educ from parents. Or lack there of, mostly.

It depends on the individual. A whole country can't be judged because it is made up of so many people.

Well they let out around 2:30-3 where I live.
The whole education system is fucked
It's like a giant daycare
We are more uneducated than ever.
I am already starting to build a curriculum for my potential future children.
I think it varies somewant by district. In some they appear underpaid relative to market.
I’m in Ontario Canada and teachers here are paid above market (as demonstrated by the huge wait list and competition to get teaching jobs here).

Democrats love teachers. But only if they are brainwashing kids with their radical socialist agenda.
No... If you want a quality education, join a church and send your kids to a private school. or, get a college degree in homeschool.
