There’s research that says richer people are less compassionate. I put this down to not being able to understand hardships they’ve never experienced. I would feel like a fraud trying to advise someone on a deep and real level of I couldn’t relate. Common sense can only go so far, I doubt you’re telling them much they don’t already know deep down if they’re honest. But advising from a position of empathy (being able to relate in some way) will be a lot more effective IMHO. People aren’t daft, regardless of how respectful you are, if they can tell you’ve never been through it from what you’ve said, there’s always going to be that element that you’ll never understand (psychology doesn’t know everything and isn’t always right). I think it takes a combination of common sense AND empathy, definitely!
