Most famous writers from late 1800s and early 1900s were on stuff like Laudenum (opiate), ether (basically chloroform), literal chloroform and hashish. Opium smoking was another huge one, cocaine was huge for a while (my favourite reference was a love letter Freud wrote to his wife while he was blitzed in cocaibe.
I believe the Bronte sisters, Mary Shelly and a few other really well known ones fall in this group. A lot of others were alcoholics.
