How have we gotten to the point where Americans think it's okay to live in a semi police state?

I was getting on a public transit train before. And I was singled out for a random bag check. I know if I refused I wouldn't be allowed to go through and it's how I get home. It's outrageous that a law biting citizen could be subjected to a violation of privacy like that in this country. And those cops must not care that the founding fathers would be disgusted by this.
How have we gotten to the point where Americans think it's okay to live in a semi police state?
