You are wrong. Fair is everyone paying the same. The way you would have it is to punish people for being successful.I knew a retired guy who did something stupid (didn't hurt anyone, though) and went to jail. He was upper half middle, not quite upper class. He was punished to the tune of $120,000 by not getting Social Security for four years. Meanwhile, an identically convicted person who was unemployed and had nothing got 4 years of free room and board. How is that fair?
@WalterRadio : We obviously have a different understanding of fair, when it comes to fines.
Do you think it would be fair that I have to pay $1,000 for a hamburger at McDonald's just because I am 1,000 times richer than the median household?
@WalterRadio : We are talking about fines. Not purchases of goods. A fine is suppose to be a deterrent, to stop an illegal or improper activity. And it's meant to be a punishment. It's unequal justice, to punish two people, for the same offense, in a manner that for one, is a great financial hardship, and for another, a pittance. Again, we have different understandings of what fair means.
A fine is not a deterrence. It is a reminder.
And more than a reminder, it is a source of government revenue.
i can understand a bump but not so sure about the sigh... i mean this is one of the most replied to questions on here for ages so you should be pleased surely?
I'm really not pleased.
why not? most askers get three responces if they are lucky or a tyrade of abuse
I'm not really used to *not* having my questions featured.
oh back to that... again thats an admin decision but you can't expect it every time and the fact it is a popular question regardless of it not getting featured surely is more pleasing... do you want admin to tell you its a popular question or do you want to see the evidence for yourself which is actually a more genuine indicator?
I would like for an admin to feature it. I wouldn't have asked it if I didn't already realize it was a "great" question.
maybe they have gone on holiday... wouldn't surprise me with the ammount of trolling i have seen today
This sounds reasonable to me. I would be willing to pick up trash. As long as I could do it on my own schedule and it didn't interfere with my job.
Except that a 120$ fine to a millionaire and to someone who lives paycheck to paycheck doesn't feel it "equally." Also, money can get you benefits in jail, even with murder.
@Metlahaed Well then that's just capitalism. If you know how to get the money you're fine, if life f***s you in the a** you can't do a thing about it. Just don't speed I guess, that's all you can do.
Thank you for changing your mind and agreeing with me. It takes courage to do that, and you don't see it often. You sir are admirable.
