Do you think the US criminal justice system is more conservative or liberal in nature?

Think about specific laws that might favor or lean in the direction of favoring conservatism or liberalism, as well as the overall theme of sentencing in the US (punitive, rehabilitative, etc.) and whether or not this favors conservative or liberal ideology or sentiment. Also, think about the demographics of those within each branch of the criminal justice system and how this relates to either leaning more towards conservatism or liberalism.

For example, you can say that the criminal justice system leans more right or conservative because of its predominantly punitive sentencing philosophy and strict/specific hiring standards. Generally speaking, conservatives seem to favor more deterrent or punitive sentencing philosophies, whereas liberals opt for more treatment-oriented or rehabilitative-leaning philosophies. Also, when it comes to hiring, piercings, tattoos, extravagant dresses or suits, long hair, etc. are not going to favor a candidate in getting hired by an agency. Usually, a more conservative dressing style and approach will favor candidates. You can also say how specific laws against prostitution, psychedelics, etc. lean either towards or against conservative or liberal sentiments.

You can even talk about certain branches or facets of the criminal justice system being more conservative or liberal than other branches or facets elsewhere in the system.

There’s a ton to talk about, as this is a very complex issue.
