"I really didn't hear a bunch of negativity about China until Trump got elected"Then you weren't paying attention. It was all over the place for at least a few decades before Trump.
@NearlyNapping Then I guess I wasn't paying attention. I do remember hearing about the Tiananmen Square Massacre on the news even though I was young.
It's been going on a loooong time.I think it was the late 90s when China was given Favored Nation status. It was highly controversial then, and was barely passed by Congress. It was passed conditionally and those conditions were never met. Trump had no part of that. But it goes way back before that. Even aside from being communist, it's been well known for decades that China had no respect for intellectual property laws. I worked in engineering starting in the late 70s and I know it was an issue then. (I'm older than my profile says)China is also highly protectionist. This was well known before Trump came into office. If the sentiment wasn't already there, it wouldn't have done any good in his campaign. This is actually the Democrat side of him, catering to labor which is traditionally a Democrat stronghold (which is likely what got him elected)We saw similar protectionist policies with Japan 40-50 years ago. There is absolutely nothing new about this.
Why shouldn't you criticize China in the press? Is that not what the press is there for?
@Kiran_Yagami Sure. Just feel like a lot of it is domestic point-scoring rather than something that actually helps Chinese people.
It isn't anyone's job to help the Chinese people but the Chinese government. If they aren't doing that, then criticizing them is the best thing you can do.
@Kiran_Yagami So basically, you don't actually care about the Chinese people, but you're still going to share your two cents about the Chinese government?
I care about the people of Hong Kong, who actually want our way of life. My criticism of the Chinese government extends far beyond the Chinese populace, who you're right, I don't give a damn about. What I care about is Chinese influence creeping into our own society against our wishes. China can do whatever the fuck they want within their own borders, but they aren't content with that. They want to move in on us too and I'm not having it.
Probably because there isn't a lot about China that is positive.
@Kiran_Yagami wll im pleased we have different news to you in the usa and you just really illustrated my point perfectly
Probably because they lack the freedom of speech to criticize their own government.
I did not really feel that they were afraid so much as they were more concerned about other things.
Chinese Communist Party
Oh, Chinese Communist Party. If anything, the CCP has created a negative image of westerners (Americans) in an effort to keep their people down.
