I interpreted it more as people function based on analogical rules and assume everyone does too. They believe their standard of things, is everyone else's standard of things and thus treat them accordingly. The meaning seems pretty simple, because they themselves don't love things to a high enough degree they will believe you to be similar and regard your love as incomplete, thus in some sort of way try to justify incompleteness of their love. It can probably apply to relationships too...
