Why does the media push the false perception that police kill more African Americans?

Anonymous
The recent protests and rioting in the US have been driven by the perception that police kill African Americans at a higher rate than others, and that is simply not true. Based on FBI statistics, African Americans are actually killed at a slightly lower rate than the rest of the population.

The most recent numbers available from the FBI are for 2016. During 2016 there were 8,421,481 arrests made in the US, and 2,263,112, or 27% were African Americans. During the same year there were 1,071 people killed by police, of which 279, or 26% were African Americans. So, of all the people arrested, African Americans actually had a slightly lower risk of being killed than everyone else.

The statistics can be found at the two links below. You'll have to download the full database at the second link to get the numbers for 2016.

So, why the perception that African Americans get killed by police at a higher rate? Because the national media in the US tends to only report stories like George Floyd's when the victim is African American. There are just as many cases of police brutality against whites, but we just don't hear about them. For example, how many people are aware of Tony Timpa's story? He was killed in the very same way Floyd was, yet almost nobody has every heard about it. And Timpa's story is one of many just like it, but their deaths do not make the cut for national news so we never hear about them.

So, I pose two questions here. First, why does the media push the false perception that police kill more African Americans? And second, why do people allow themselves to be manipulated and divided so easily by the media?
