Why do insurance companies charge for the past?

Say you pay your bill a week late. They aren't going to start your policy a week later, they say well we don't we t you to have a lasp in coverage. Nothing happened last week, so why do I even need to pay for that period of time. Talk about robbery. Although I do believe they give grace periods, although I'd be surprised if they cover you if something did happen during that grace period. Opinions?
