She thinks waiters and such should get $20 an hour. So a glass of water is now $5.00, Steak $80 each. What will she gain? Grocery cart half full now is $500 . Again , what has been the gain. Would you rather get $10 an hour for 40 hours or $15 an hour for 16 hours? There is a saying , "be careful what you wish for , you might just get it"
Did you not read the story? 51,000 people just lost their jobs (and this is just ONE company!), so that 75,000 people could get a few bucks more an hour. Their additional taxes won't begin to offset the support costs of those 51,000 unemployed, so taxes will have to go up.
You have to look below the top layer of things and see what the actual effects of changes are. Surface-level thinking is what leads to destruction.
I think we should remove minimum wage and make it a living wage. If more people have money that means they have more money to buy things so that also means it will create more jobs
You're living a fantasy. Who decides what a "living wage" is? What would stop people from moving from rural Ohio, where a "living wage" might be $10/hour, to San Francisco, where a "living wage" might be $40/hour? Who do you think is going to pay for this?
The reality is that your pay is a reflection of the value you bring to your company. The vast majority of adults are not making minimum wage, because they've invested in themselves, their education, and their career, and they become more valuable than the minimum wage, and as a result, they get paid more.
Minimum-wage jobs are mostly for kids/those brand new to having a job. Those jobs are NOT intended to let you live an an adult on your own. If you want to do that, you need to provide more value, so you can demand a higher wage.
If you're a middle-aged adult, without a mental illness or serious injury, there's no reason you should be working a minimum wage job - you should have, by then, gained enough skill in SOMETHING to be more valuable than that. And if you chose not to make yourself valuable, or are unwilling to show up to work on time, follow the basic rules, or get your work done properly, then, yeah, maybe minimum wage is what you're worth. That's a CHOICE.
It's not the taxpayers' responsibility to give you a comfortable life - it's your OWN responsibility.
It's time for Americans to speak up and quit letting these corporations rip of their employees.
If the American worker doesn't say nothing nor protest they will continue to be exploited and taken advantage of. Best Buy needs workers for their company to succeed. Pay up or go to hell as a company.
Best Buy just fired 51,000 employees, in favor of robots, because with the increase in minimum wage, the robots are cheaper. Best Buy is in no danger of going out of business - it's only workers who are screwed.
The pandemic is over in 6 months. We will have a big boom next followed by a crash. Unemployment does suck but it does give you the chance to start a business, get some training, and do something more productive than being a wage slave at Best Buy. When you look at an economy after a big recession, most of the growth comes from unemployed people starting new businesses.
Cool. Then all the industries that don't produce enough value to pay that shouldn't exist. Like The sweetshops that make your clothes, we should use the army to force all those dirty poor Indian women out of work. Hopefully they won't all starve.
Women tend to stay at home to take care of the children, (something men decided was the thing to do) then ease back into work by taking part-time jobs which then possibly have gender pay gaps. Which honestly don't know about that one, pay gaps are more likely seen in corporate jobs. Then it also mentioned about women living longer.
if a woman stays home with the kids, they tend to not need welfare as the husband is the provider, unless she's a single mom. Either way you look at it, women are a net loss of 150k in taxes, men are a gain.
Your not supposed to have that job your whole life, so it won't work. Crime will skyrocket because black people, and young teenagers won't be hired. If you make companies pay you that much, they will expect someone to be ready to work without training. Fast food job is made for extra job not a career.
Nobody would want to live off $20 an hour their whole life... It's living wage it's only what is just comfortable enough to be able to afford food and rent etc
Great no places to eat , how will you live then? I love you young idealistic people. You have no clue what the real world is like. Never had real economic classes apparently. What is your major? Acrylics? I know communications? When you go into the real world , you will see it is nothing like what your socialist professors told you.
You're missing the point: if you increase the minimum wage, you increase inflation, meaning everything costs more, and you are back where you started - except that everyone's buying power is now reduced, and this especially affects people in a fixed income. Increasing the minimum wage does not happen in a vacuum - in other words, you can't increase the minimum wage and expect everything else to remain the same - the increase has a huge cascading effect throughout the economy that ends up hurting more people than it helps.
The solution is not to increase the minimum wage, but rather to increase your own individual value to the company, so that you can demand a higher wage individually. That's how people "move up the ladder."
Except that this isn't even close to being limited to Best Buy.
Tons of small mom & pop businesses will close completely, as they'll be unable to make $15/hour work. Bigger companies will move towards automation and will eliminate jobs. You'll end up with people with college degrees doing service work, and those without will be on the dole or on the streets, because there will be no jobs for them. Some will eek out a living via a cash-based business "under the table", but most people won't be able to do that.
And you know what happens when you have a bunch of able-bodied people who can't work, can't earn a living, and are barely able to survive, and have nothing to do? You get violence, crime, and riots. Something the government is only too well aware of. It's almost like they WANT that to happen...

The same thing happened here a few years ago when the gov upped the minimum wage. The wages went up & the staff was cut back.

Increasing the minimum wage only reduces the number of jobs people can have and depletes the buying power of retired people's savings.
If we get people a higher minimum wage less people need money from the government!!
That also means less taxes!!

time to start gerrilla warfare against big corporations? can we start a fight club?
Too bad. Let Best Buy go under then. Either you pay your employees a decent wage or shut down the business.
It's time for Americans to speak up and quit letting these corporations rip of their employees.
If the American worker doesn't say nothing nor protest they will continue to be exploited and taken advantage of. Best Buy needs workers for their company to succeed. Pay up or go to hell as a company.

Well unversial income will be the future then. These large greedy corporations need to cease taking advantage of workers.
All businesses are tryig to go ai or robots so its time to kearn to repair the robots an computers it will be a smaller market for jobs in near future
Did you see what else they did? They laid off over 50% of their staff.
And freed them up to find a better job. That is a win win scenario.
@b5fan true during normal times, not pandemic times.
The pandemic is over in 6 months. We will have a big boom next followed by a crash. Unemployment does suck but it does give you the chance to start a business, get some training, and do something more productive than being a wage slave at Best Buy. @b5fan completely unrelated, you're not by chance a babylon 5 fan are you?
Yeah I loved that show. Great writing and acting.
@b5fan Agreed. So sad that Mia died. She was one of my favorite characters.
@worldscolide Yeah. We have lost a lot of stars lately. They did remaster the series on HBOMax which is cool.
@b5fan Yup. I ripped my original DVD's to plex so i didn't have to worry about damaging them if i wanted to watch the series again.
to be fair, the economy sucks right now anyway, thanks to that r tard, trump and his tax cuts FOR THE RICH
Good for them, $15 base wage, reduced employment and reduced hours and benefits. Almost like there was never a pay increase.
Americans thinking they're the only people in the world. Minimum wage is $20 and we don't have robots doing all the work.
Someone down voted me when I said the exam same thing as you 😬
Minimum wage is going up to $20 in April here 🤗☺
Great! That will solve everything.
Its the living wage so makes sense
How will it help the people "live" who lose their jobs because of it?
If you can't afford to pay your workers living wage or above then you shouldn't have a company 🤷🏻♀️
Cool. Then all the industries that don't produce enough value to pay that shouldn't exist. Like The sweetshops that make your clothes, we should use the army to force all those dirty poor Indian women out of work. Hopefully they won't all starve.
This is why women didn't deserve the vote.
Yikes sorry that my country is more progressive and allowed women to vote 🤷🏻♀️
Too bad it didn't teach them to read, obviously, as you failed once again to read the comment.
Muscular dystrophy, is another "Progressive" disease akin to Progressive-Socialism. Only an idiot thinks progress is inherently positive.
No I just ignored the first part obviously. I don't live in India and don't buy from sweat*shop companies ☺
Also I made the comment like that because I live in NZ aka the first self-governing country to give women the right to vote.
yeah makes sense, a country where the majority of the women are a net loss, they cost way more then they pay in taxes.
Man misogyny runs deep in you. I suggest trying to get rid of some of that hatefulness you might end up enjoying your life a bit more 😊
lol, I have a great life.
I see you can't debate facts, just like MOST women.
Facts require proof, which you haven't provided so I'll just assume that you are spitting out feelings 😊
www.wgtn.ac.nz/.../research-shows-disparity-between-tax-paid-by-women-and-men
Did you even read the article before posting it...
they took down the full report. NZ women are 150k net loss. They suck-up so much welfare, just like the USA
So you didn't read the examples as to why this could be?
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/roiw.12165
yeah the typical BS Gender pay gap. If women were cheaper businesses would hire only women.
Reading around the point I see.
Women tend to stay at home to take care of the children, (something men decided was the thing to do) then ease back into work by taking part-time jobs which then possibly have gender pay gaps. Which honestly don't know about that one, pay gaps are more likely seen in corporate jobs. Then it also mentioned about women living longer.

of course women live longer, men do most of the hard work, dangerous jobs, fight the wars.
In areas like San Francisco $20 an hour get's a flea infested studio apartment if you have a room mate.
@Daniela1982 which shows how idiotic it is, no adjustments for region.

Except inflation happens even when the minimum wage doesn't go up
I said "what have you gained?"
So you don't buy shoes, like NIKE, as most are made in overseas sweat shops.
And when did they get that right? Women have been voting in the US since 1920.
Nope don't buy nike...
Also nz women have had the right to vote since 1893 😊
Best buy is anything such, it seems.
Next comes ubi, another step towards communism
Very good reasons to not shop at Best Buy. Thanks!
Except that this isn't even close to being limited to Best Buy.

Is bc of the wage or Covid?
what would a blow job cost?
get a better paying job
Nice fear mongering.
Fear mongering is when you warn of something that never happens. I was reporting on something that DID happen.
Best fired and closed due to the pandemic, according the article you linked.
Best Buy *
And fear mongering is not warning about what will happen. It’s about scaring people into believing something.
The "thing" actually HAPPENED - just like it always happens. I'm trying to get through to all the people in denial about WHAT HAPPENS.
then write a mytake. This isn't even a question, just stupid ramblings.
What's the question
