Hispanic people who were born/or lived awhile in Latin America is social class more or less important than in the US?

I was watching a telenova, where the upper class characters are haughty when it comes to class, but it is mostly just talk on their part, the worker characters give them more lip than I think most Anglo-American employees would endure, and don't get fired. I know that I shouldn't believe telenovas to be an accurate representation of real life, but I am curious about the truth.
