I believe there are two genders but multiple gender identies.
I think some of them make sense for some people but there's also a lot of people who are very confused about who they are. I think society tells people who to be sometimes and then when you're someone who doesn't fit into one of the cookie cutter shapes, you wonder what's wrong with you and try to find a shape to fit into. And in the process you can lose yourself.
I don't like to go out of my way to encourage it, but if someone needs to use gender identities to find themself or make sense out of how they feel, then let them do it. Is it really gonna take anything away from you which you're not better off learning to be without?

Well there are hermaphrodites. So you might be able to say there could be 3. I know what you mean though and in my opinion (other than that slight technicality) there are two. People who are transgender, non binary etc etc are only that way in their mind. It's imagination becoming reality due to agreement among minds. Is there really a king of mediaeval role playing groups? There is if you ask the people who agree there is. Are there really pieces of paper which have a higher value than other pieces of paper? There is only because we agree there are. Are there really different countries? You get the idea.
