What are some often forgotten messages from MLK that you think are relevant today?

The letter from birmingham jail, MLK said: I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Bernice King said it best. . .

Please don’t act like everyone loved my father. He was assassinated. A 1967 poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in America. Most hated. Many who quote him now and evoke him to deter justice today would likely hate, and may already hate, the authentic King.

You would think folks would just be honest in their disagreements with MLK. Even I didn't agree with everything he said.

People need to stop sanitizing MLK jr to make themselves comfortable

I think that one thing about King that people have forgotten about, but which is incredibly relevant, is how overwhelmingly unpopular he was amongst most Americans. He was seen as an agitator, a radical, a revolutionary, a socialist, and a threat to American national security. At one point he had an approval rating of 17%, while the FBI - which had been unconstitutionally wiretapping him and even tried to convince him to commit suicide - had an approval rate of 50%. Many people hold King up as this beacon of peaceful protest, and use this to criticize everything from NFL players kneeling during the anthem to the Black Lives Matter movement as "unpatriotic" or "disrespectful". The truth is that if all these people were around in the 1960s they would have said the exact same things about King.

His ideas are no longer relevant today as you can see we no longer live in the 60s. It's time Black America accepts responsibility for their own faults. Putting black faces into power has changed nothing for the poor inner city blacks. Obama is worth like a billion dollars and could easily start a huge business employing black people but he won't because he doesn't give a shit. Stop quoting MLK and hijacking his legacy for your stupid cause.
