Is "White Privilege" real?

The important thing to note here is that redlining really was that bad.
American public schools have done a damn good job of scrubbing this one with all the nuance of a grill brush. If you ask a particular person when redlining was outlawed, they likely wouldn't be able to pin it down, not even to the decade.
Redlining was the process of selecting prerequisites and requirements for owning property, and then systemically making them harder for minorities -- black people, in particular -- to acquire or achieve, thereby forming vacuums inside which property values plummeted. it was quite literally the process of vindictively isolating black people and other minorities into ghettos, and then draining the local region of social mobility. This caused completely immeasurable damage to these communities; Schools were getting less tax money, so the quality of education took a total U-turn for literally tens of millions of black Americans, compared to the constantly-improving quality of education around their surrounding majority-white communities. Businesses had no interest in selling things to people who couldn't afford it, so grocery stores, restaurants, specialty stores, and eventually service facilities and power companies pulled out of the areas, leaving vast economic deserts, where there was simultaneously nobody to work for, and nobody to buy from. With such a massive and sudden (at least for the time scale we're considering) absence of infrastructure, tax dollars waned, and, in some cases, dropped to zero. Public infrastructure comes from tax dollars, so we can go ahead and say goodbye to playgrounds, libraries, parks, wildlife preserves, trails, poverty centers, food banks... you get the idea. With so little to do recreationally, and with bare survival pressures making "legitimate" means of acquiring capital infeasible for keeping food on the table, you can imagine what happened next.
Redlining was formally outlawed in 1968 by then-president Lyndon B. Johnson. According to an AARP study, the average first-time grandparent is 50 years old as of 2019 (source: www aarp org/content/dam/aarp/research/surveys_statistics/life-leisure/2019/aarp-grandparenting-study. doi.10.26419-2Fres.00289.001. pdf, periods removed because low xper). The average first-time grandparent today could have literally been raised in a redlined community. The idea that the effects of redlining have somehow been drowned out by time, or in any way, shape, or form negated by policy, some legislature, welfare, or some nebulous cultural shift is _unbelievably_ naive, and completely disregards the subject of inter-generational wealth and social mobility. This position is also, unfortunately, held by quite a fraction of the white American populace, in my anecdotal experience.
This is one of many ways in which minorities specifically are disadvantaged, materially, relative to white people. So I ask you, dear reader: Does Twitter saying "black lives matter", or banning your favorite edgy conservative, or people getting some get-out-of-jail-free cards for a few riots and smashed-in Targets really "even out" the privilege dynamic? If you fall in the "all races have their advantages and disadvantages" boat, I sure hope I'm not the first to tell you -- Check your privilege, you low-sodium, gluten-free saltine cracker. Doesn't matter what race you are, ethnically speaking -- that's the highest form of white people shit and you know it.
Sincerely, the whitest, most privileged kid out of the midwest you would ever meet.
To add to that, consider how long it took for segregation to become "eradicated" in the united states after the Civil Rights Act -- and then consider what forms and shapes redlining probably adopted to stay alive despite the legislation, just like the many systematically racist maneuvers that came before (and, yes, after) it.
America may not be racist, but the people with the most money and power inside it have a vested interest in allowing racism to flourish, such that they would ideally be absolved of the social responsibility to repair damages done to their fellow Americans. If Google owes Facebook for damages, your team owes my team for damages, your parents owe their parents for damages -- if all of these types of groups of people owe other groups of people for damages done to that group -- then WHITE PEOPLE OWE BLACK PEOPLE FOR DAMAGE DONE. It's that simple.
Take people as individuals and get to know people in a individuals, not as a collective or group. A lot of the back and forth on topics such as this is purely based on groupthink and the negative thought patters it can create in our internal dialog. Those non-white that you believe are criminals can be anything but a criminal and you could be standing on a lot of common ground. Ground that you are not seeing because the groupthink in your internal dialog is preventing you from seeing it. The same can very much be said about the white that you believe is more privileged then you. Once we are willing to get to know each other as individuals and work towards finding the common group we all are standing on, humanity will start moving forward in a better direction.
It’s definitely real. I’ve seen it first hand living in California. I went to a Walmart and they didn’t even check my receipt but the African American people ahead and behind me they would. Not just there, but many many other stores. They never check my receipt. Also, I’m not followed in stores but when I see darker skinned people they get followed around. Also, I get asked if I need help, no one asks people of dark color that I notice. In fancy neighborhoods the people wave at me, where as if I’m with a darker skin friend I’m not. Etc. Definitely exists
Depends on the context. In some instances its probably real, in others it won't be. Everyone's experiences are different. I as a white person have also experienced racism when outnumbered by an Asian community. I just think that whoever the minority groups are, they'reikely to experience it in some form, both provably deliberately and not so deliberately.
I know I have friends of many nationalities and I don't consider myself racist at all. I will however take a dislike to anyone being deliberately intolerant though.
If some white people have “white privilege” and others do not... wouldn’t that prove that the “privilege” is about something other than the color of their skin?
If white privilege was real, then all white people would have it. From rich white billionaires, to white crack babies born homeless and addicted to crack.
They would all have the exact same said privilege... if you have to pick and chose which white people have the privilege, then clearly something other than skin color is supplying the privilege! Right?
@John_Galt I mean it’s a fair point yeah, depends how white privilege is defined though... @asker?

Privilege exists in all shapes and sizes
the Privilege of having a structured family
the Privilege of being born into wealth
the Privilege of having an education, or having good health.
etc
But is this specific to a race? no
and does your racial background dictate if you will have those privileges? no
But your attitude... your culture.. your outlook on life will influence these outcomes.
If a Black boy is born into a decently structured family, with find schools
is he more privileged than a White boy who is born in a porn rural region with very few work opportunities? Sure.. in a way he is
Does this mean the White boy won't succeed? or that Black boy is likely to succeed? It really depends on a large list of variables.
White Privilege in the way it is used (along with other terms like White Fragility)
are racist concepts
that attempt to simplify complex situations..
LETS BE HONEST
the Black community would be in a far better situation if they had a better foundation
be it family structures... be it cultural attitudes (aka not anti-establishment.. anti-authority)..
put education first... instead of developing assumptions of failure
^ A particular demographic has succeeded at this... . Asians.
IF America was truly racist.. and has White Privilege was everywhere.. its unlikely Asians would be the highest earners.. BUT THEY ARE... and why is that? Because of the foundation.. because of their emphasis on family.. on success.. on education
I am sorry to say that the Black community generally doesn't take those issues seriously
and laying blame on another group (whites).. does nothing but cause tension.. and prevent anyone from succeeding.
I think privileges exist in every race. I think whites have had some legislative privileges privileges that other races haven't had, such as drugs commonly used by white folk not getting as hard of legal punishment as drugs other races currently use and some class privileges such as getting lowered sentences because they had connections, but I think both of those are more of a result of class privilege than white privilege. Research shows mostprivileges denied to minorities are denied to the poor, not because of their race, but because of their class. Unfortunately, race class as recently as the 80s has been cycled through white flight. I think America is heading in the right direction as the class melding pot stats to diversify our classes. I think there's a lot more class mobility in America than most assume. White people aren't even close to the most privileged in America. Asians, and believe it or not, African American immigrants have both been incredibly successful in America (significantly more so than whites) because of their privileges and there's nothing wrong with that. Being privileged isn't a sin, but I think it does create a responsibility to assist those who are less privilege. Unfortunately, most people can't be bothered to accept that responsibility. African American immigrants though appear to embrace that responsibility. Its truly delightful to see their success and that they use it to benefit those less fortunate.
Riiight all that documented cases are just wrong
Dont you have fckn youtube, infinity amounts of footage is online
The vote would only be accurate if you get the skincolour of every voter
Also, there are even multiple studies that proofed, that nobody denies the existence of racism more that white males...
Oh no, how can you say that...
Man, you fckn kidding me?
Almost every rich white person got that money indirect through white privilege...
Because if most that money was gives from the parents when they died, and they got it from their parents and so on, there is an incredible high chance that it was made on the back of black people
People who got rich through slavery, are still rich... do you think that the after generations of their ex-slave black people did see any of that money, no, they're still poor
Not really, but about 10 years ago, in one of my courses (possibly everyone in the class was white,; if not, almost everyone), when I was a college freshman, we were given this scenario: You are approached by an official who states: "A mistake has been made, and you are black and are no longer white. We are sorry for the mistake which can't be reversed. However, I have authority to give you compensation for the mistake. How much should the compensation be?"
The most common answer was $1 million.
I believe it is a victimization belief to promote people of color over things that people who are alive today are being guilt tripped into because of things their ancestors did and is a part of our country's history. White people alive today do not need to feel guilty about the sins of the past that they had no direct involvement in. The only thing they are guilty of is if they are openly and vocally racist. And I mean legit racist, not racist because of a disagreement.
If anything, minorities have become the focus and are being pandered to more than anything. You know how weird it is as a POC to see white people calling each other white supremacists and having white privilege in the name of social justice and being progressive over something simple as a petty disagreement when there is no true racism to be had?
Unpopular opinion coming up, but anyone who buys into that shit is fucking retarded.
It’s a myth in the 21st century the United States isn’t systemically racist except for affirmative action which actually helps minorities. But it is racist because it’s discriminating against white people. Racism is the discrimination of individuals based off of their skin color if you give Black people privilege over white people it’s racist if you get white people privilege over Black people it’s racist we no longer have those laws in the United States in the 1950s we did and in the 1950s where you were systemically racist but 2021 no.
it’s your individual decisions that make or break you it’s not your skin color at least not anymore in China yes China is the only place on earth we can get away with having a McDonald’s that says no Black people allowed I say boycott China.
It's very much real. Just because white people, like myself, may have had difficult lives, it's not due to the color of their skin. My adopted uncle had the police called in him for hanging out outside his apartment building. I've never seen that happen to white people.
Maybe?
I don't think it's a universal truth. There's definitely privileged people. Of all races. I haven't ever experienced it myself. Honestly fuck racism and fuck you for asking such an ignorant, broad question that couldn't possibly be answered accurately in any way shape or form, just to troll the dumber masses.
Well, some people get preferential treatment. They get hundreds of points added to their SAT tests for college just because of their race. They get special admission to colleges and work just because of their race. They get promotions at work just because of their race. Their race must be included in interviews for jobs. They have special funds available to them based on their race. But they are black people, not white. White privileged is to get passed over for college, jobs and promotions based on race. Don’t believe me? Who gladly checks the race box on applications? And who checks , “prefer not to say”. HR told me that if “prefer not to say” on race is checked it is a white male, the only one with any preferential treatment. Diversity and inclusion simply means not white male, it is actually exclusionary not inclusionary.
If you have never wondered if the police will shoot or beat you to death for being a POC, you have white privilege.
cry me a river, POC violent crime targets Whites at a sky high rate compared to the reverse.
It's a myth push by black supremacists so they can have black privilege. It's mainly people looking at class privilege And trying to make it about race because there too stupid to look beyond someone's skin colour to realise their life circumstances maybe difference. Allow this to happen so the black supremacist keep their black privilege of Stuff like affirmative action
Of course its real! Its a real lie used by SJWs! Its that excuse they use to attack white men! Its the excuse to force companies to hire people based on race instead of skills!
Just don't expect white people to actually benefit from it. Its damn hoax.
Are Buffalo chips real😜, and do you like too snack on them with a cold beer (carbonated urine 😝, you dumb 💩) in your hand?
It’s definitely real where I live and from what I’ve experienced.
These are one of the questions that you might as well have made a "MyTake" about.
I am sometimes GIVEN (little) privileges - and I don't ask for it or even want it.
It must be kind of real, then.
I'm white and it's definitely real and I hate that it is.
@JustTheTrue
Weird flex.
I’m latino too and think it is. So I guess we cancel each other out?
@JustTheTrue
That really means nothing. Plus all latino people know, including us both, that racism exists within the latino community and that we come in a wide variety of colors and ethnic combinations.
Would you say that mulattos and indios don’t have a different experience from people who look purely European? Hell, that racism exists within parts of my own family.
Your family sounds toxic no wonder you seems so emotional invested in this topic. Lol
But since you claiming that racism exist. Let me ask you this, are black people racist?
@JustTheTrue
Welcome to South American family dynamics, dear. A fun mix of self hatred and infidelity.
And yes, there are racist people in all groups. And a lot of racism is directed from one minority to another. That doesn’t make white privilege in the USA not a thing though.
If you look into it. Every race got their own privileges. When I worked at a restaurant a white lady the manager, she will only hire Hispanic. She avoided hiring white or blacks and that goes in other type of jobs. Now when I worked at Walmart the Hispanic lady who was doing the hiring, I don't know the reasons but she only hired Black people and the only white and Hispanic she hired were for cleaning the floor and restrooms.
Now look at this other thing. In my university, they give 2 scholarship of $2000 to black students, the GPA didn’t matter at all. No Asian, no white, no Hispanic get those scholarships. So telling me that there is white privilege is a no, most of the privilege I see is on black people and here me out. I got nothing against black people, three of my friends who I got a lot in common because we study the same major are blacks and two of them are hardworking the other one became lazy after he graduate.
@JustTheTrue
I think you might be misunderstanding people when they say white privilege. I always understood it as people being held to a different level of scrutiny. I think that scrutiny is most apparent in the job market above menial labor and the legal system.
I think it exists but I don't think anything should be done about it. It'll equal out on its own
It was a long time ago, but now it's all about black privilege.
White privelege is real and it's most apparent when you don't live in a white dominated part of America. A. K. A the hicks.
Thank you hick but I rather enjoy the life I live. by the way, the hick is dangerous to outsiders. I rather value my life so I'm gonna have to deny your pretentious invitation. Also, great one for lady kind to insinuate that a woman would get raped or mugged just by being a lady. Solidarity is an art form it seems. Stay off my opinions.
