The west/capitalism was once upon a time marketed as not having a central employment bureau, but is now far worse than Soviet communism?

So I grew up with the 'one shop' you had to go to to get a job - and if they didn't like you you could end up suffering significantly (i. e. if you had any non-communist history/ancestors etc)

At the time, the free market and the choice given by applying directly to any business seemed great. If you wanted, you could work 3 jobs for a few years and pay off the bulk of your house/set yourself up for good living.

Fast forward to 2021 and the big data driven workforce matching is far worse than the communist central employment bureaus. A) they fail to understand even the most basic things about you, B) they flat out lie about what you will get, C) they go berserk even at the notion you might want more than what they decided you are worth. To speak about the quest for 'references' and the milking for business contacts and sales leads that this serves is pointless - there is just no recourse for being treated appallingly, it flies (and people turn to crime for their living).

Why did the west, after its economic model won the cold war, abandon it and adopt totalitarianism quite a bit worse than that of the Soviets.
