Tyson Fury who is tomato can is the new heavyweight champion of the world beating Deontay Wilder who is even a bigger tomato can. What happened to men who actually knew how to fight like Roberto Duran, Wilfredo Gomez, Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, Alexis Argüello, Roy Jones Jr, Juilo Ceasar Chavez Sr. Mike Tyson, Salvador Sanchez, Evander Holyfield, Oscar De Hoya, Floyd Mayweather etc.
I believe George Foreman demonstrated the correct answer to your question in his historic fight against Ali. Although Ali was significantly shorter and weaker than Foreman he would never back down. Sure he was intimidated, but he fought through his fear and in turn out the fear of God in Foreman. Foreman was not used to going very long in the ring due to his power, but Ali worked hard to be able to take the hardest body shots in history during his training. Something that scared forman during the fight since he's never had to fight that long. Tldr it's a matter of heart, you have to be unrelenting, fight your fears and have enough heart and thirst to become the best. No one since Mayweather has had that drive in my opinion
Every generation says the same sucking on their member berries. When Muhammad Ali was fighting people were saying the same harking back to sonny liston, rock Mariano, Joe lewis, jack Dempsey, gene tuney, jess Willard, jack Johnston, Ezzard Charles, Max Schmeling etc. You left off some pretty big names of your great list like Lennox Lewis who beat evander holyfield and Tyson an dominated the heavyweight division for a decade. Let's not forget the Klitschko brothers. Tyson Fury is not a Tomato can nor is dontay wilder, nor is Anthony Joshua or other current heavyweights.
Tyson is a straight bum and Wilder can only do one thing which is a right hand which in case in lands which it mostly don't since he is wild with technique.
Tyson fury is not the best HW of all time but would give a lot of them a hell of a rough time. He’s far larger than anyone you’re considering and made even guys like wlad klitschko look small and confused - and he’s also enormous vs anyone else. There have been other huge fighters before but most of them were lumbering. Fury moves -really- really well for his size. On top of that he’s got all time great chin and toughness and boxes smart. His downside traditionally is that he’s displayed middling power for a HW. That said as he adjusts to the Kronk style that may change.
Wilder is a technically mediocre fighter with one of the heaviest right hands ever. He always shows up fit and he’s carried his power late into fights. He’s fairly durable. Given that combination I don’t think there’s any era he wouldn’t have been a contender because he’d always have KOd any but the top guys.
As for the lighter fighters you mention, hey the smaller guys have almost always looked better - they’re faster and in the welter-middleweight range, there are just a lot more men that size so the depth is much more. Always has been. But I think we will certainly look back at guys like Lomachenko and Crawford as belonging with the sort of fighters you’re listing.
I still have Robinson as #1 all time. And I do think boxing was ahead of now somewhat in the past. But there are some great fighters today. Mayweather retired pretty recently and I’d put him top 5 and maybe top 3 all time.
Because it's more about size now rather than actual skill... Men are getting bigger with every generation so they don't need to train.. their size gives them an advantage in its own.. in the past guys trained because they weren't massive so it was the skill that seperated them from other men
Yes but not freaks of nature I'm 6 foot 2 and see plenty of other guys day to day around my height... Were talking guys at 6 foot 7 6 foot 9... They require no training to beat most average guys... Reason why wilder has no skill and relies on just his brute force because 9/10 it's too much for guys that are 6.2 6.3..
Basically someone Ali, foreman's size could still felt intimidated before learning how to fight hence why they trained... Someone like fury being that he's 6.9 has most likely never felt intimidated due to being beyond intimidating looking so coasted on the size advantage as it was enough... Tonight wilder met someone bigger than himself and equally as strong for him now to overcome Tyson would require him to actually improve his skill set
I'm agree with you but not totally. The sweet science has hit a valley yes. But pathetic no. The fighters can fight but the can't fight like the fighters that I know and watch growing up. This too shall pass and the best athletes in the world will have the sport back on track soon enough.
It's because everybody who was once great, has now left the game. The ones who go down in history are the ones who everyone notices. Now, you're left with nothing but average to mediocre fighters, and everyone is just realising it. Tyson fights like a crippled old man, and I get the impression Wilder is on crack.
I think is the generation of sissified men we have today. Your generation of men were tough and expected to act like men and they took it even in sports. The NFL today is even soft. Tackle someone too hard and they throw a flag. 😡
