Cool. Why did you choose karate specifically? And would you like to learn another style?
Mostly convenience and because my family all started there together.I'd love to try Brazilian JiuJitsu and do more aikido. I would also love trying kendo and naginata, but more just to experience it versus establish a long practice of it.
Oh yeah bjj is especially great since it's about raw power and more about technique which evens the playing field a bit. That's why you sometimes see women beat men in it. So do you spar or compete regularly with other women or men as well in karate? I'm not sure how someone "wins" in it.
I've only done a little bit of ground work, and it's totally different from my regular style, so it'd be a refreshing new experience. And yeah, I spar with men and women - though not since COVID, so I'm rusty at the moment. We score our flights, but at higher levels we don't need refs. We just acknowledge when we're hit and we just "play". At lower levels, we don't expect hard contact; at my level, however, I'm expected to be able to take a solid hit and deliver one in order to lose/score points. I prefer fighting men in my club. It's been several years since I've had a female peer near my level. The only other female close to my level is one of my senseis and she's better than me - and has been doing this since nearly before I was born, ha ha! The only bad thing about fighting her is that we have similar styles and share a sense of humour - we end up doing the same move and laughing too often. 🤣
