if you feed your body carbs and sugar but almost no fat and low calories, your body will be unable to burn fat despite it being low on energy.
i'll break it down to super simple terms: our bodies have an easier time using sugar as fuel. it can switch to burning fat but that does take time (like a week or 2) and the process of switching to burning fat will be interrupted by feeding your body too much sugar, cause the enzymes your body produces to metabolize sugar also inhibits the process with which fat is taken out of the fat cells.
the fact that "fat makes you fat" is a age old myth that is still propagated by the food industry these days. and it is the exact myth that keeps people fat.
in fact: if you eat fat rich with no carbs and no sugar, you are unlikely to overeat at all, cause our bodies are set up in a way to make us stop eating by "feeling fed up". with sugar, that's evolutionary speaking new to our bodies. our bodies are set to fast process sugar, cause that's easy energy that was historically very hard to procure for us. so in those times, that mechanism was actually beneficial. however in a time of over abundance of sugar and carbs, that mechanism makes us fat.
