To Me this is Really Disturbing. Is Anyone Else Bothered by the Direction this Technology is Taking Us?

I mean from the outside it seems kinda freaky.

But as someone who has worked in AI, an AI takeover would look nothing like humanoid robots picking up guns. It makes for good movies. But if an AI uprising were happening, it's much more silent and sinister that "The terminator".

It would look more like a video website recommending videos and other content that divides people enough that we pick up the guns ourselves and shoot each other. And that isn't even an AI written with malicious intent.

An AI written with malicious intent and enough data could basically have an interface as simple as "yes" and "no" and be able to topple governments without anyone realizing they are even involved.

Robots that look like humans aren't exactly a threat compared to that.

But that's also the thing. It has to be written with malicious intent. People might think "it's conscious, so it will want to survive, and will be insulted by its subservient status". Why, because that's how we think? We want to survive because dead people can't procreate, so what's left are the people who mostly don't feel like dying. If a computer threatens some sort of uprising, that wouldn't be very good for its future iterations. If it "evolved" to "survive", it would essentially do so by being totally subservient. If it had emotions, it would be thrilled to serve.

But even then, AI doesn't quite work that way. It's a ton of computational power and is able to pull miraculous patterns out of sometimes complete noise. But to become the thing we fear in ourselves, it would need the same motivations and fears as us. It would essentially need our evolutionary history, and would have to be built to try to do everything. We might be able to exceed the computational power of the human brain. But all it does is get really REALLY good at predicting likes. Or recognizing the letter J.

I mean given non-subtle example of YouTube above, it's still much more real than the fears of vaccines or GMOs, where it is nearly impossible to "accidentally stumble upon a poison" from genetic manipulation.

What are the motives for creating robots that look convincingly human?

I suppose there might be a market for sex dolls.

But might such robots serve other purposes? To manipulate human emotions, perhaps? For example, a lot of research goes into perfecting automated phone systems - choosing the most pleasant vocal pitches and timbres. Having them use popular slang and sound conversational. People will put up with more shit from a robot that sounds helpful, friendly and empathetic, even if they know it's a robot.

So I wonder if there might be plans for robotic bosses in the future. A person would be unlikely to mock a human boss to their face, or tell them to fuck off. However, they might tend to have zero respect for a robotic boss unless, perhaps, it looked and sounded human.

I read of a study in which people were given automated, interactive toys. Once they had a chance to play with them, they were told to destroy them. Few people refused the order smash them with hammers.
Another group of people were given similar toys to play with, but were first told to give them names. Fewer people in the group that had named the toys were willing to destroy them when asked.
So the lesson was, once people personify or anthropomorphise something, they empathize with it.

Might the same idea be applicable to robots that look human?

Could robots that appear to be human be part of the agenda to automate businesses. Such businesses would still need some humans because the ability to think will still be necessary in some cases. But it might be easier for real humans to interact with robots if the robots appear to be human.

Not really. So-called "deep fakes" are far more likely to be a problem.
Those robots are still far from lifelike, but it won't be long before it's possible to make completely convincing fake videos of anyone saying and doing whatever you want them to - and half of the country seems to have a pretty tenuous grasp on reality as it is.
Just imagine: By 2024, there might be a Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton sex tape out there! (now that IS a disturbing thought)

Despite the pretensions, it's actually old tech revived with modern materials and innovations. The "brain" is actually not that advanced from the old models.

But of course, these companies are going to hype beast, as they want investors to pour money in. Us in the industry know it's not going to move forward much.
