I’ve been living in Lisbon since I started college, around 3 years ago, before that I rarely came here even though I didn’t live that far. For someone who grew up outside the city it’s really hard to get used to the city life, I would never live here permanently, so I really don't like Lisbon as place to live.
It’s only when I imagine myself in the place of a foreigner that I can find all the amazing things in this wonderful city. Lisbon definitely has a certain magic.
The viewpoints (miradouros)
The hills are the reason for the amount of viewpoints in Lisbon, although it will annoy you since you’re always going up or going down, you’ll get amazing views of different parts of the city. Some of the most famous are miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, then you have miradouro da Senhora do Monte and miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner (everyone calls it Miradouro da Graça) which great for sunsets and miradouro das Portas do Sol is the best to watch the sunrise.
Palaces and castles
Everyone visits São Jorge Castle, but you’ll probably be disappointed, since the only good thing there is the view. Here are some of the palaces you should visit...
Palácio Nacional da Ajuda
Palácio de Monserrate
Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira
Palácio da Foz
Palácio da Regaleira
Palácio da Pena
Museums
Every city has museums and Lisbon is no different from them, with most of them being located in the downtown district.
MAAT is famous among tourists and locals, it’s great for photos.
There’s also Museu Calouste Gulbenkian
Museu do Oriente
Museu Nacional do Azulejo
Lisbon at night
When the weather is warm (during the rest of the year too) you’ll find the streets full of people outside of small bars in Bairro Alto and Rua Cor-de-rosa (Pink Street).
Time Out Market and Lx Factory
I think these places need a category of their own, since they gather restaurants, bars and shops all in one place.
A nice way to discover one of the most beautiful parts of Lisbon is to walk from Praça Marquês de Pombal to Praça do Comércio. Don’t be afraid to get lost, that’s the only way you’ll enjoy Lisbon.
Have you visited Lisbon?
