How did St. Bart's become a playground for the rich and famous?

I just remember reading that in the 50s, there were only black people there, and it was very poor and crime ridden, than the French cleaned it up, but there are other colonial islands that aren't frequented by celebrities. So why is St. Bart's so popular with celebrities and rich people?

  • I’m guessing someone at some point set the trend. And now the amenities offered there cater specifically to the rich and famous, which makes them want to continue coming back. It’s a positive feedback loop

  • well the french finally installing electricity in the 1960s was a start. hard to be a haven for the wealthy or tourists in general without electricity. from that point on they simply worked to make the island a tourist attraction by building hotels.

  • Usually, when something becomes popular, it loses its appeal to those who want to do the "in" things and be a part of the "in crowd." A few well placed news reports on celebrities vacationing at St. Bart's gets noticed, Conde Nast does a few articles on the place, the St. Bart's Chamber of Commerce (or whatever equivalent self-promotion agency it has) appears at a few travel agent conventions promoting itself and handing out free goodies to travel agents, and "all of a sudden" it becomes a hot spot for getting away.

  • I don't know anything about St. Bart's but I just have to point out how disgusting it is that some men felt the need to comment on the women's appearance in the picture when they have nothing to do with the question. Geez.

  • People are sheep and do whatever anyone else is doing. Some celebrity in the past went there so now they are all doing it.

    • REALLY? I didn't know that.
I know a lot of plantation owners in the South also served their slaves lobster.

  • I think the truly amazing thing is that the French cleaned something up? Wow.

  • Wouldn't it be fun, if there was nuclear bomb hidden there, about 10 Mt, and when there would be most of those "rich and famous", bomb would go off?
Nobody would never figure out, who put it there and why. No group claiming (successfully) responsibility. Just random nuclear weapons killing a lot of "rich and famous".
I wonder, how would the world react. What would be the response and so on.
Am I the only one? Really? Hmmm. OK. But I still want to know.
No, you idiot, I don't want to kill anyone. And I don't wish for anyone's death. I'm just interested in events which would follow.

    • I will some day. I'm waiting for crime to calm down on St. Martin, so I can stay there and take a ferry

    • I was just in ST Martin last Feb and there is little to nothing left after the hurricane last year. All hotels were destroyed, boats and cars were piled up in streets, hundreds of roofs were gone and it will be ages before enough money, supplies and workers would be able to rebuild what it use to be. They told us St Barts was spared much damage. The French side of the island is in just as bad shape but think the French govn't is helping them much more than what the Netherlands is helping their side.

    • @katiesmuff Did you feel safe?
And my dad said, "Oh you can go. It's back to normal" I really thought they rebuilt it already.
      What about Barbuda?

At this point it sounds like it would be better to just save up some money and fly to St. Bart's and day trip to nearby islands from there.

  • Because it has really nice bitches.
