What does "check-in separately" means on flights?

I was searching for airline tickets. And on one website, it said "separate check-ins." What does that mean? I'm going on a trip, with two layovers from my origin to destination.

  • It means you need to check in for each leg of the flight. If you have 2 layovers, you need to check in 3 times total.

    • Does that take a long time?

    • No, it’s really only an issue if your check in opens during one of the layovers and you don’t have access to the internet. Because check in opens 24 hours or sooner before the flight you just need to make sure you’ll be able to check in for all 3.

  • It means you have to check in at the desk or online for each flight and if you have luggage you’ll need to collect it and check it in to your new flight.
It’s a pain in the ass but as long as you have plenty of time between flights it’s fine
