My best friend and I had the best time ever for my birthday trip in December. We stayed in an AirBNB in a residential neighborhood on purpose because we wanted to just sort of wing the trip and just go off tips from locals of what to do. I would HIGHLY recommend this. Why? Just on local tips alone....
-We went to a random banger of a house party in the Quarter
-Got beignets that were bigger and better than Cafe Du Monde
-Went to this NOLA thrift store with the craziest odds and ends
-Did a photoshoot at some places people recommended were good for photos
-Went to a music festival celebrating Santa
-Went to a Onesie Pub crawl in the Quarter where everyone was wearing onesies
-Went to Gretna just over the bridge, and ended up having dinner with this restaurant owner and his family who found out it was my birthday and had the whole restaurant sing to me
-Went to some of the more well known landmarks (of course)
-And ate so much gumbo and po-boys from a place we found within walking distance of our airbnb
Seriously everyone was super friendly and so ready and willing to share tips of where to eat, and where to go to have a good time because they are used to everyone coming to have a good time. Also hit up Groupon which we used to save a bit of money, but also allowed us to go to some places that were more local.

We went on ghost tours, regualr tours, they had the gator rides but we didn't want to, lol.
Lots of shopping eating yummy food and visiting the night life.
Voodoo stuff as well of course.
Garden District walking tour, all kinds of food, and MUSIC! Nawlins' is all about music, and I don't mean the rap/pop/synthetic shit - real music. I'm sure you'll find plenty of clubs with that now, but it's all about blues, rock, big bands, dixie land. The street musicians are great. If you're going in the summer, be ready to swelter in unbearable heat and humidity. I wouldn't recommend it.

Well, I don't know how much YOU would enjoy it, but I went to the National WWII Museum in NO (formerly the D-Day Museum), and I found it to be fascinating and informative. If you (or he) has any interest in WWII, there's a lot of great stuff to see.
My SO and I have been to New Orleans. Some things to do:
1. Enjoy the food, try several different restaurants
2. Walk around the French Quarter during the day, and at night
3. Ride the historic St Charles trolleyI cannot believe that we lost the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. We had that city in our bloody grasp! Rebel commander Andrew Jackson cheated by bringing in foreign reinforcements and pirates to bolster his army, typical of Rebels. Commanders Sir Edward Pakenham and Samuel Gibbs both perished in action. :(
Doesn't bleedin' matter anyhow, the city has more in common with the Caribbean than it does with North America.
New Orleans is one of my favorite towns. There are numerous historical sights and buildings to explore. The Audubon zoos. The architectural changes, Spanish then French. All kinds of fun food.
Great restaurants all over. Go to Preservation Hall. Check out other music venues around the city.
I’ve never been, but when i go i’m going to do every ghost tour i can find!
(1) get gumbo and Po’bos
(2) check out the gators and wild Boars in the swamp
(3) enjoy the architecture
Go Into the Shop and get the Vampire Flyer and pay To Hear the History of Vampires.
Eat and eat some more. Go listen to some live music like Cajun and Creole, blues, New Orleans jazz
They have great bars and restaurants by the gulf with good food and music.
