At least 25 people have died in a suspected arson attack at a renowned animation studio in the Japanese city of Kyoto today, according to police. The death toll at the Kyoto Animation Co. building, in Kyoto's Fushimi-ku district, includes some directors and animators, and is expected to rise; the city's fire department said 36 people were also injured in the blaze, many critically.

A Kyoto prefectural police spokesperson said the 41yo man who carried out the arson attack, now in hospital with serious burn injuries, also had a backpack with several knives. The suspect poured what appeared to be gasoline around the studio, with Public broadcaster NHK reporting that the man said "drop dead" as he set fire to the building, at about 10:30 a. m. local time on Thursday

People near the site said they heard a series of explosions, and later saw people carried out in blankets. About 48 fire engines were dispatched to the area, and footage from the scene shows thick smoke billowing out of the building as firefighters worked to douse the flames. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tweeted that he was left speechless at the "gruesomeness of the crime," and offered condolences to victims.

The company's philosophy as posted on its website includes keeping a "humanitarian" corporate culture and believes that "promoting the growth of people is equal to creating the brightness of works." 33 deaths confirmed now- they've found 10 bodies on the second floor, and they're only just starting to search the top floor.

Latest reports say the man isn't a former employee, but eyewitnesses say he appeared to be "angry" and "resentful" towards the animation studio; quoted as saying that they "heard him saying something like 'you copied it'," and shouting "you ripped me off!", as he ran away from the building towards a nearby train station after starting the fire, before collapsing.
