Is it still self defense if your strike is stronger than your opponent's?

I dont know all the details, or really any of them, but I think it is clear that she should not have struck him so hard. He clearly is not a tough guy, and she should have known that and held back her strength, the strong are supposed to protect the weak so even if she had a good reason to hit him, she shouldn't have hit him so hard.
