@FýrdracaDócincel You're right. Let's look at the Iraq War.That was not considered a world war, as only the NATO powers and Iraq were involved. If Iran and the US went to war, at most we'd see a few regional middle eastern countries going toe to toe with NATO. That's not enough to justify calling it "World War 3".Countries these days are less likely to blaze a path towards total war like they did in the 30's and 40's.

@FýrdracaDócincel We learned what total war did to us way back when. The Soviets lost tens of millions, Britain and Germany were devasted, really the US was the only superpower to come out of WW2 relatively okay. Nowadays, diplomacy and MAD (mutually assured destruction) tends to keep superpowers far away from each other. There's a reason the US and USSR never went into combat directly during the Cold War
