Apparently the commander of the IRGC air force indeed said that the operator thought it was a cruise missile flying towards Tehran, hence engaged.
Cruise missile at 8,000 feet? No. Also, the 738 would have been climbing at approx. 250 KIAS until it hit 10,000 feet... hardly a "cruise missile" profile.
Okay. There’s no reason they’d purposely shoot down an airliner.
I mean, if there was somebody on board they wanted to not leave the country, there are ways to do so without shooting the plane down.Such as, you know, telling airtraffic control to not let that plane take off? Or to not let that person board the plane? That is both very much possible, I doubt it’d have more grave consequences than just shooting down a plane with 176 lives on board
No reason that we know of. There could have been key people on the aircraft the IRGC wanted dead.
And why exactly would shooting down a plane be a better solution than the thing they’ve been doing for years, making up bogus crimes and locking them away for 15 years in Iran?I mean, they can stop the plane from taking off. They can arrest someone. Like I said, no reason to shoot down that plane. Far more likely it is just an accident
Or you know, killing them while in Iran. You can have them run over by a car or a bus. Far less profile, far less collateral damage, no international condemnation, nothing to be paid, no harm to your reputation.
That's true enough. I guess we have to chalk this up to "hire the handicapped" in the IRGC "Surface to Air Missile Program". They probably learned how to hire idiots in key positions by stealing US government quota program guidelines.
Everyone shoots down civilian airplanes on accident, it's more common than you'd think.
@JesseTheMan no when it’s from your own airport in your capital city and you didn’t want to and no one was attacking you.

To be fair, this could definitely have been a mistake (seems to me that it probably was), an assassination is with exactly the goal to kill. Sure, they should pay up, but it is completely different from an assassination
