Why do people catfish online?

Can someone explain to me what people get out of catfishing? And lets be real, its only guys that are catfishing. What i don't get is what exactly is the point of catfishing? I'm not sure if its suppose to troll people or if guys get turned on by it or what. I just don't understand it or get why so many people do it.

  • Hey, I dont know where you are from or what your personal exposure or experience of catfishing has been but I have been catfished and it was a woman, not a guy.

A girl created a Facebook profile and befriended many of my friends before eventually befriending me. We chatted online for several months before deciding to meet. I was slightly apprehensive about this as I dont use FB as a dating site but we seemed to really click and I was curious to see if this would translate in real life, once the laptops screens and security blankets had been removed!

Well I was shocked to see that this girl looked nothing like her pictures and didn't even try to pretend that the pics were her. At first I was pissed off and felt so decieved so of course I challenged her. She then started crying and she was visibly upset so I calmed down and took a different approach. Anyway, after about an hour of talking I realised that she was just a very insecure girl who had a run of bad relationships where guys had abused her and put her down to the extent that she didn't value herself anymore. She created a fake profile with an image of a woman she wished she looked like and created an alter personality to go with it. She isn't spiteful nor do I think she is a bad person. She dealt with her issues the wrong way and has since taken the profile down. I only wanted to respond to your question because you seem to think that catfishes are only guys. Watch Catfish on MTV and you will see they come in all shapes and sizes.

  • People catfish because they are not as attractive as others and want to trick people into being in some kind of relationship with them. The way I see it; if the pic is of a wicked hot chick or guy they are probably fake, if they live close by but can't make the time to see you then they are fake, if they won't video chat or call you on the phone they are fake. I watch Catfish and 8 times out of 10 it is actually the girl or guy in the pictures. If its too good to be true it most likely is.

  • so that horny middle aged white guys can chat each other up pretending to be girls.

  • They are not as attractive IRL so they want some attention online.

  • It's NOT only men, wth. Where do you get your information from? From behind a rock? 😐

    • Exactly wth

  • Yeah, nice obvious deflection there.

  • Some people are mentally separated from reality. So they make up scenario in their brain as to, "she's perfect for me, she will be mine, we will be together FOREVER" and literally they think of this shit just by a picture or a simple compliment. Or they are sexual predators or like the chase.

  • they probably think it is funny or trying to incite people in some way. they are goofballs or idiots, take your pick. boys will be boys?

  • Probably just trolling.

Otherwise I wouldn't know why, long term or regular catfishers are just too bored, and I really dunno what theyd get from it.

  • Good question - @Lesbianbusinesswoman @JoannaB - what do you boys think?

    • HAhaha I could tag a few others but they have me blocked!

    • How do you find out they're dudes?

    • @Puppylove94 Experience...🙋

  • People just want to be accepted sometimes so they put up a pic of someone else who is ridiculously good looking to experience what it's like I guess. Nothing is more annoying than be accused of being a catfish though. Women actually catfish more than guys it seems like.

    • Except for the women with the "fake profiles" are usually men lol

  • I see more women cat fishing than men.

    • BS no you don't, women attention whore not catfish, its a guy thing for sure.

    • I saw a female catfish on this website as well. She posed as a social media star.

  • Sociopathy.
    Loneliness.

  • I always take Catfishing and think of the levels, are you a nasty catfish who is manipulating someone romantically/socially for sadistic pleasure or gain. The most famous catfish on GaG was so realistic, she/he had everyone believing she was a current victim of abuse. Okay that level of catfishing is pure wrong.
Then you have a normal catfish a guy/girl wants a pretty profile pic, maybe talk sexy on GaG, in reality so what? - I will say that you look pretty but if I have doubts I will not talk to you in any depth.
I feel everybody is dishonest online just to different levels, most of us project the coolest image of ourselves here, knowing we are not quite like that in real life while others escape into fantasy land.

  • i do it because I get a chance to talk to people like you and others who are hiding behind a false identity just like me. We ar both in the same pond.

    • I get that you're trying to sound like a cool anti-hero catfisher that's catfishing the catfish but you sound pathetic.

    • Why?

  • Their lives are too dull so they make one up and live someone else's.

  • Yeah!. You are to beautiful to be true!..
And if you want I will start dogfishing

  • I believe they use it to escape their lives. Which is a sad way to go about it.

  • They aren't happy with their own lives so they live in a separate world where they can be whatever they want

  • To steal money from gullible, vulnerable people.

  • me either that wrong gay lol people messed up n da head gender issues...

  • dunno, maybe they're testing people

  • Didn't the woman from Sister Wives got catfished by a woman pretending to be a man? So, not all are men, not even sure how you would determine percentages.

  • People (as a whole) are scum.
