Taboo and Shame.
For women and girls displaced by conflict or natural disaster, managing their monthly periods can be challenging. Few female hygiene products are available, private sanitation facilities are hard to find and clean water is not always guaranteed.
Information Lacking.
Access to information was also scarce. Girls learned about menstruation from mothers, sisters or friends. Making sure women and girls have access to suitable materials (and underwear!) and know how to use them is important. Nothing could be more personal, more intimate, than how women manage their periods. Doing so effectively can only be done with quality information.
Advertisements.
In June 2016 the presence of red blood in a UK Bodyform commercial was greeted with approval in social media for its attempt to challenge the stereotypical menstruation ad, by showing women who struggle despite bleeding from cuts, blows and bruises they receive while playing various sports. REALLY SOCIAL MEDIA CAN DO ANYTHING.
Movies
Movies and television also reflect the taboo nature of menstruation. Pad Man is an upcoming 2018 Indian biographical film written and directed by R. Balki, featuring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in lead roles and cameo appearance by Amitabh Bachchan, which is inspired from the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu. The film is scheduled to be released on 9 February 2018.
