A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Hello GirlsAskGuys Community,

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Recently I had asked one question on Rape Culture in India. Let's evaluate it by looking at facts from Official Websites rather than focusing on reports of Xenophobia Media Houses.

United States

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).

About 3% of American men or 1 in 33 have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime

Every 98 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. That means every single day more than 570 people experience sexual violence in this country.

Most women in the UK do not have access to a Rape Crisis Centre

1 in 5 women aged 16 - 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16.

Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts.

The foreign media always describes India as having the maximum number of rapes, but this is not true. A comparative report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reveals that India actually has among the lowest rates of rape in the world.

Another way to compare countries’ rape statistics is to look at conviction rates.

India’s National Crime Records Bureau shows there were 24,206 reported rape cases in 2011. Of those that made it to court that year, which was not disclosed, 26% ended in convictions.

In the U.S., RAINN estimates that just over half of rape cases that are prosecuted in the U.S. each year leads to a conviction, a much higher rate than in India.

USA and many European countries do have more rapes per capita than India. Sweden is about fifteen times more rape infested than India.

Clearly, many assume the West is far more civilized and therefore should be much safer for women. It bloody isn't safe for women anywhere, and it is absolutely true that India is much safer for women than many countries that also joined the noise to make a big deal out of India's rape incidents.

The hypocrisy and plain stupidity of those who ignore facts and simply call India much more unsafe for women needs to be questioned.

7% of reported rapes in the U.K. resulted in convictions during 2011-12. In Sweden, the conviction rate is as low as 10%. France had a conviction rate of 25% in 2006. India, a developing nation with countless challenges, managed an impressive 24.2% conviction rate in 2012. That’s thanks to the efforts of a lot of good people police, lawyers, victims and their families working heroically with limited resources.

Along with the modernization of society, more Indian women are being educated and are going out to work. They are breaking out of the subservient mold that society had given to them and are more independent.

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

UN study estimates just 11% of rape and sexual assault cases worldwide are ever reported.

When was the last time you saw people from other countries, come to the streets and discuss on how to reduce rape or crime against women in their country?

If common people in those countries too knew the reality and the media did their job, then even in those countries women would be afraid. Really afraid. Celebrity cases are always in headlines. Media Houses get TRP.

According to Dave Prager, the American author of Delirious Delhi, crimes that “wouldn’t garner even a sentence in an American paper because so many bigger crimes would elbow it out of the way” are obsessively reported in Indian news publications. Post the Delhi gang rape, Indian media have faithfully recorded each and every rape case, highlighted them for the world and continue to do so.

Germany

The professor fails to realize that Germany has 5 times more rapes than in India. Rapes from India are heard all the way in Germany, but the German media is unable to report 5 times more rapes in their own country. The German ambassador's (Michael Steiner) answer to the professor explains “the unfair judgement”

Official Twitter Account of German Ambassador

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

The height of ignorance is when a German Professor is afraid to take a student for internships, because of “Rape problem” in India.

“Unfortunately I don’t accept any Indian male students for internships. We hear a lot about the rape problem in India which I cannot support. I have many female friends in my group, so I think this attitude is something I cannot support.”
"I fully agree that this is a generalisation and may not apply to individuals. However, it is also unbelievable that the Indian society is not able to solve this problem for many years now. Reports reach Germany on a weekly base, and especially these "multi-rape crimes" are threatening, but for me also demonstrate the attitude of a society towards women. Also female tourists are kidnapped by groups of males and then abused.
"Many female professors in Germany decided to no longer accept male Indian students for these reasons, and currently other European female association are joining. Of course we cannot change or influence the Indian society, but only take our consequences here in Europe."

Laws and Regulations

Making any law stricter is going to make many innocent men suffer. Also our laws are not gender neutral. A government organisation DCW (Delhi commission for women ) estimates that 53.2 per cent rape cases filed are false.

We should wake up and realize that the problem of crimes against women is universal, and not just a cultural problem. It has nothing to do with Indian culture.

Women Worldwide feel Less Safe on Streets compared to Men And India ranks average.

Worldwide, 72% of men and 62% of women say they feel safe walking alone in their communities at night. There were double-digit gender gaps in 84 of the 143 countries studied, with broad gender disparities most common among high-income and upper middle-income countries. The implication is that as countries develop socially and economically, expectations of physical security become the norm for all citizens -- but in many cases women are less likely than men to feel those expectations are being met.

Note that the disparities were higher in countries that are economically strong. If you look at the data carefully.

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

India is a lower middle income country. Therefore we can safely predict that India is in the group of least gender disparity in street safety.

Of course, now you might say that 'lower middle income' is a very big block and we cannot consider India to be representative of that statistic. Fair enough! But India is not the absolute worst out there. Afghanistan and many other countries are absolutely a nightmare for street walking women..

High Population

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Crimes always go proportional to population. In any society, you can assume one in 1000 will be crooks and criminals. If your whole nation is just 1 million people, you need to deal with only 1000 such crooks. If you have 1000 million people, you have a million potential criminals to deal with. Thus, you need to adjust all figures to population.

Even if you assume that 95% of the rapes are not reported in India, while 100% of rapes are reported in the West, India still has lower rapes as % of population.

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Media Reports More Actively

Indian media gives a greater importance to individual rape incidents than most other media around the world. This helps put the problem right in front of our eyes and hopefully that pushes us close to reducing the rates. Most of the rest of the world, avoids reporting gruesome rape incidents. Western Media Houses are only interested in discussing the Celebrity Controversies. Go and Ask your Media Houses before pointing fingers on other countries.

Victim Blaming

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Victim blaming is prevalent again in all countries, in many it is worse than in India. One such example is the Brock Turner rape case , USA.

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

The only reason why you feel safer in many western countries than in India even if the situation for women is far worse there, is simply because their media does not want to show their country and people in a poor light.

The ICM opinion poll, commissioned by Amnesty International, revealed that the vast majority of the British population has no idea how many women are raped every year in the UK.

Almost all, 96 per cent, of respondents said they either did not know the true extent of rape or thought it was far lower than the true figure. Only

4 per cent even thought the number of women raped exceeded 10,000.

The number of recorded rapes in 2004/5 was more than 12,000 and the 2001 British Crime Survey estimated that just 15 per cent of rapes come to the attention of the police.

Indian media and Indian people know that such a problem exists, that’s why parents are afraid to send their daughters alone at night, etc. That’s why we have debates and debates on how to solve the problem. That’s why we have higher conviction rates, although the cases are dragged on for centuries.

Man Vs Female Reality

A Closer Look at Rape Culture in India from the Perspective of Indian Man

Woman in the USA is more likely to be raped than a woman in India. Europe is not one nation, but many European nations are indeed more likely to expose their women to rape than India.

School Rape

In the USA, for instance, a preying kind of gang-rape of a stranger may be less likely. However, in India it is highly unlikely that a group of school students gang rape a school mate.

Suggested Reading

2009 Richmond High School gang rap

Good Indian don't know how the heck this is all that different from the famous Nirbhaya (Jyoti Singh) rape case - other than that the victim in the USA was known to the rapists.

Why the Indian Media didn't jump on something like this, but it is probably because it would be of no interest to Indian audiences, since it is happening somewhere far away.

Date Rape

The date-rape scenario is a little less likely in India, because younger people in India are still living with their parents, and aren't entirely independent when it comes to making such decisions.

Rape Culture in United States

US has plenty of ghettos and neighborhood regions not suitable for women to even walk during day time. A lot of time you may observe that some nearby underage women gets raped. However, they don't call it 'rape culture' in US. It's just routine in US. A lot of streets during night (after 8 pm) are not safe. The streets that you see safe and lively during day time end up stark silent at night time, and some of the cases of abduction and rapes have happened plenty of times. But US doesn't call it crime valley or rape culture there, it's just part of crime routine for you.

Women are safe in US in school or colleges? Don't kid me. A lot of them unless taken vow for purity are desperate enough to lose virginity before turning 18, some of them are into revenge sex as well. Wait, that doesn't qualify for rape culture but yeah that does give you some hint on level of respect female want to have or wish to get

US and UK were always were critical towards indian culture. Granted, indian culture does have flaws and they were treating females not equal. But none of the indian families had treated the way 'middle east' families treat women.

Males given less Preference

All Indian Males become Rapist and all Marital laws are revised to punish Males. Today all the Males in India are given second preference in everything and that due to females are treated not equal to men. e.g. In education sector, females get reservation and so do in job despite their poor skills compared to male competitors in many instances. They get reservation in almost everything under the law. Yet, equal treatment for them requires more sacrifice and humiliation from male gender but No worries because Indian Man respect her mother, sister and females. We never start Sexist or Feminist movements on Social Media.

The current condition of females in India will only breed more anti-male women population and eventually lead to more gold-digger incidents. Any random female on street can shout rape and get you in trouble by mob. Any random married woman can shout dowry if you don't agree to her demands and can force you to commit suicide.

Response to @mizushirazu

*"criminalising marital rape "*

The best way that the law protects women subjected to marital rape is by charging the husband with a minor offence of cruelty, the punishment of which goes up to three years in jail or a fine. In worse cases, she can seek restraining order and protection under domestic violence legislation.

  • Statistics show that in western countries women are raped more at their home or at their relative's home which still means that they are safe on the streets. No matter how many statistics you give, this take was very bias.
Since, you are an Indian you will defend your country.
I still believe Western countries are much safer.
People don't stare at women or flirt with them.
In Western country, a person can dress however they want to, they don't get judged on their looks or the way they dress.
    What about female foeticide?
Those who don't know what female foeticide is, it is when an abortion is done to avoid having a daughter without a mother's knowledge. A lot of doctors in India are bribed and they carry out abortions of female babies without a mother's permission.
Daughters are hated in India and people give more preference to sons. Once reason is dowry. Every year, 10 million girls get married under the age of 18 in India.
Bribery and Corruption is high in Asian countries including India, something I learnt in my business course. Bribery and corruption is very low in western countries, which is why western countries are more successful. I think in Asian countries, people tend to blame the rape victims more than the rapist and women are shamed for being raped. What about domestic violence?
Once two people made videos of corrupted doctors, who do female foeticide, who do abortions of female babies without a mother's permission, they went to court for 7 years and still justice was not given. Once even the judge, said "what is wrong with wanting to have a son?" Another issue which was raised was that when women are abused by their husbands, they either go to the hospital or the police station, but it is all men at the police stations, who can be bias and may favour the men or even support domestic abuse. I am sure there are many women in India who don't even file a report at the police station to avoid getting shamed and they may find it awkward or embarrassing. Honour killings are also done in Asian countries.
Recently, a lot of British Indian were forcing their daughters to get married and David Cameron made forced marriages illegal. Once Indian mother-in-law and father-in-law went to America to beat their daughter-in-law up. Also, in India many women live in joint families, which also causes domestic violence because it is like a mother-in-law hates her daughter-in-law&complains about her to her son, who then supports his mom&behaves harshly with wife.

    • All the information I got is from an Indian reality show called Satyamev Jayate which was hosted by a Bollywood actor called Amir Khan. He revealed stories on female foeticide, domestic abuse, dowry, hatred against women, inequality with the rich and poor students and many other issues that were happening in India. In one story, the mother-in-law kicked the basket of her twin grand daughters down the stairs, because she wanted a grandson. This is something that gives me chills just imagining the scene in my head but fortunately nothing happened to the babies. They were in a blanked and the belt was done. However, it makes me feel angry towards the mother that despite knowing what her in-laws were like, she continued living there. Indian women sometimes suffer domestic violence in silence whereas western women raise their voice. Amir Khan also highlighted that female foeticide happens more in urban areas because they have more technology to find out where it will be a baby boy or a baby

    • There were many shocking stories revealed about corrupt fraud doctors on Satyamev Jayate by Amir Khan. In one case, doctors lied about an illness and removed the uterus from 100 women leaving them barren and childless for the rest of their lives. There were stories where unnecessary operations were done to earn money, like liver transplants, removing toes, in one case the victim even died, and many of those doctors are still working. Amir Khan revealed that more doctors are fired in England due to strict rules and less doctors are fired in India because they get away with crimes.

  • I can't agree with everything you say. But I am not Indian nor am I from India, so I have no real basis from which to contest what you have posted. It is a great "take" because of the effort to find supporting sources and documentation.

I would say that in the U. S. we have firmly established that rape culture exists in certain industries, neighborhoods, etc. But things here will get a lot worse before they get better in terms of rooting it out. I don't know if there is enough energy to sustain the current movement.

We are not a very sophisticated society when it comes to difficult issues like rape and sexism. Americans most of the time mean well, but we began this movement on the silly notion that women are perfect victims, which they are not. And when we find that out, we tend to have problems understanding that just because some women are idiots or deceptive people it should not taint how we view other situations.

On the flip side, some people refuse to see nuance and try to color all sexual assaults, failed attempts at courting, bad sex, etc. with one brush. And it demoralizes the people who honestly want to create change in how we view and deal with sexual assault.

We have one of the most serious cases of sexual assault In Larry Nasser a man who victimized hundreds of girls/children, and the Olympic Committee, the University, Local Law Enforcement and the FBI all knew about the charges. Yet no of them believed the girls. And this pedophile continued to molest girls with abandon.

I cannot speak to the situation in India. I don't proceed to claim it is better or worse. I know that Indian male at GaG get stereotyped and mocked because of media portrayals

But many Americans are not all that sophisticated when it comes to looking at people from different groups. It is now considered PC to learn and understand about people from different backgrounds. We have many folks who cherish ignorance and wield their ignorance like a bat to keep knowledge at bay. Hence some of the insults you get here. All I can do is say that I am sorry.

But despite that, I do feel that you may be biased about your description of Indian society. Being biased is not a bad thing. We all have our biases.

Thanks for posting this take, my friend.

  • Less reporting doesn’t equal less rape. Just more fear of coming forward for all areas.

    • Even if you assume that 95% of the rapes are not reported in India, while 100% of rapes are reported in the West, India still has lower rapes as % of population.

I hope you take it into consideration the POPULATION of India.

  • Your entire mytake falls flat due to your sole leaning on statistics to prove a point. Statistics don't mean anything if the definitions of rape or sexual assault aren't the same in all those countries.

@ jacquesvol said this also: the number of rapes reported - the more east you go the people are less likely to report those kinds of things. The less 'developed' a country is the less likely it is they'll report it or even take it seriously if it gets reported.

If all countries on this planet had the same definitions, same police forces, same time, samo money, same concern and care for their citizens... the statistics would matter.

    • It should be noted that the crime statistics reported to the United Nations in the context of its various surveys on crime levels and criminal justice trends are incidents of victimization that have been reported to the authorities in any given country. That means that this data is subject to the same problems of accuracy as all official crime data. The variety of potential problems with recorded crime statistics. Experts generally regard cross-country comparisons of crime statistics as being characterized by methodological difficulties. What is your opinion? Do you consider India safe or unsafe? Why? Why not?

    • Well said. Martial rape is still legal in India.

    • @Espolare2000 The best way that the law protects women subjected to marital rape is by charging the husband with a minor offence of cruelty, the punishment of which goes up to three years in jail or a fine. In worse cases, she can seek restraining order and protection under domestic violence legislation. It's is legal it doesn't mean that woman can't take actions. We have laws in IPC to protect woman rights.

  • I agree that the West isn't much safer. But to say that India *is* safer for women is something that I highly question. The reason for the higher numbers is that a lot more women are coming forward in the West than in other countries. Even in Europe, for example, it is still the woman who is being questioned for wanting attention if she reports sexual assault, and my knowledge is that the farther East you go, the more this sentiment is prevalent.

    • The conviction rate of a prosecutor or government is the number of convictions divided by the number of criminal cases brought. In case woman in western countries are coming forward. Why conviction rate is low? *"But to say that India *is* safer for women is something that I highly question."* India is more safer than Western countries. Question your Media Houses who were banned in India for fake Reporting.

  • For European country I think it aren't safe because of immigrant. Every time I've been bothered in the street by comment and all it was always by an immigrant and I don't even dress sexy or anything. I mainly wear hoodie, large shirt, jeans and sweatpants so

    • "been bothered in the street by comment and all" as if that didn't happen 50 years ago or in the US. :D

    • @jacquesvol 50 years ago men weren't bothered with feminist as much as they're are nowadays. Plus personally the only person who have done that to me were immigrant.

    • Feminists exist since more than 100 years. Only older men couldn't stand them Now some young incels think it's feminists who make them incels. And maany of the "immigrants" in your country were born and schooled in the west. Not really "fresh import" thus.

  • from what i have read seen and been told by Indian immigrants, due to the culture and caste system a majority of rapes in india are accepted as the norm and go unreported

  • Your feeble attempts only prove that India is far more dangerous. Fewer convictions means that Indian men are allowed to get away with rape without being punished. Fewer reports means that women are more afraid to report when they are raped.

  • I read online
