it is an affectionate thing. sort of like how you might like a guys aftershave.
the scent reinforces attraction.

Just going based upon the body language in the situation, and the closeness with which the guy stood behind me (we were posing for a picture), (ie breaking that physical personal-space barrier), I didn't think it was a bad thing and it wasn't off-putting in any sense of the word. It was just interesting to note that he thought I wouldn't notice. Thanks! I wanted to attain a male perspective, and see if my intuition was right in the matter!
